It makes no sense to me that every physical store in a state must check IDs if you want to buy porn or alcohol, but porn websites can just let anyone in without checking ID. There are legitimate privacy concerns with checking ID online, but I think it’s way past time that the government does something to restrict the supply of porn to minors via the internet. The same with social media. The evidence that social media…

Your position is that a 12 year old should be able to buy any porn that they want?

An identity provider can make verified age one of the claims on an OAuth token. It removes anonymity, but at least you don't have to provide your personal details to everybody on the internet demanding age verification. You provide those details to your trusted identity provider, they provide the claim of your age to the website. With that in place we can easily make beer, liquor, marijuana and tobacco sales on the i…

Where are you based? I can purchase alcohol from Amazon UK with no obvious age checks. Deliveroo require that riders verify your age but in reality they just ask you to type it in. And the major grocery stores deliver alcohol without any obvious checking too. I imagine teenage drinking is much easier these days thanks to the above :)

Enforcement is much more strict in the states, generally. It does vary some state to state.

Sugar is addictive. And it might have more effect on your lifespan than the consumption of pornography. Quality of life, too.

Yes it is, and that's why we teach our children about nutritional health and, in some places, regulate things like school dinners and products aimed at children. What point are you making in relation to the topic at hand?

I can't read GP's mind, but sugar doesn't require ID verification to buy in the state of Utah, for example.

About a month ago I had my groceries delivered from Wholefoods and the deliver driver carded me for some non-alcoholic beer I had purchased. I tried explaining to him that he didn't have to do that, but he wouldn't unload my groceries until I let him scan my ID.

This happens to me at self-checkout at Safeway. I guess I can get somebody to come and check my ID, but seems unnecessary.

Not sure if it's everywhere yet, but where I live, QFC and Fred Meyer have started scanning IDs for every alcohol purchase, which is a bit disturbing because that block of data on the back of your ID has a lot more than your birthday on it. I have a passport card that doesn't scan but is still valid ID, but I wonder if there's any legal issue with printing your own barcode that says "mind your own business" or something and sticking it on there.

From your comments it seem you're in Germany where the legal drinking age is 16, so it's not surprising

this is absolutely not the job of the government. you are responsible for your kids. this is just inviting more and more police state big brother bureaucratic bullshit and less rights, less freedom.

Then why do we have laws restricting the access of minors to various goods in stores? By the way, those laws are broadly popular.

People don't (generally) want to stand next to a 13 year old while looking at what porn/sex toys to buy, but beyond that it's pretty much the same argument. Alcohol/drug sale restrictions are probably the more interesting half but I'm not so sure drugs and media are fungible. After all, there are valid places to draw the line beyond "no government involvement on anything whatsoever" and "government involvement on everything moral because we did it on one thing".

There are about a gazillion porn websites and legislation only affects the top like 3 of them. Completely pointless unless you have an entire surveillance system like China's firewall

You don't need a surveillance system you just need a framework for people to sue for damages.

No, but driving a car or possessing a gun does. Different solutions for different issues is hardly a contentious proposal.

But is pornography dangerous for minors? Has it been researched? What "dangers" are there? Do these apply to all age groups of "minors"?

I suspect any academic study proposing to show pornography to minors is going to get shut down pretty quickly. In my own anecdotal experience I’d say it definitely can be dangerous and depends on a variety of factors, a key one IMO being what kind of pornography we’re even talking about. In my youth we discovered a friends dad nudie mag stash. Lots of glamour photography of topless women, some full nudity too but alw…

If the intention is to expose young people to porn and then measure longitudinally how they fare in life, ethical issues aside, I suspect that wouldn't work because your control group is very likely to become contaminated. And good luck getting the experiment underwritten.

Rather I think you'd take a large sample of adults at a given age range, interview them as to the earliest age they recall consuming pornography, and compare it with their life outcomes: income, alcohol addiction, educational achievement, etc. Of course you're only measuring a correlation, but at least you'll be able to get your study funded. And naturally such studies have been done, although I suspect many are agenda driven:
