Then why do we have laws restricting the access of minors to various goods in stores? By the way, those laws are broadly popular.

Right? Why can't you scan your ID and then be prompted what information to share with the system, like age? I scan my ID, the system asks to retrieve age information, it retrieves it, now I can proceed to scan my alcohol. No human interaction required.

If the person manning the self-checkout operations thinks you look awfully young to be buying alcohol then they can always demand to see your ID.

Simple.

+1 for teaching lawmakers how to achieve their goals at the protocol layer.

Imagine how much better the web would be if cookie consent was a browser protocol on top of HTTP headers. This is the Obviously Correct solution, they just needed to work with browser vendors to make it happen.

I’d rather you have websites support a generic cryptographically-secure claim schema for ages (implementable in any signed token the browser can emit) than actually check everyone’s identity.

Good point. The new generation that came online this past decade never had to deal with popups, Limewire viruses and other things that forced us to learn to some basic level how a computer works and how it can be compromised.

It reminds me of this 2021 Verge article quoting a college engineering professor who had to revamp teaching material as many of their students did not understand folder structures and computer file systems. Why would they? For them, everything is on Youtube, Netflix and Spotify.

Where are you based? I can purchase alcohol from Amazon UK with no obvious age checks. Deliveroo require that riders verify your age but in reality they just ask you to type it in. And the major grocery stores deliver alcohol without any obvious checking too. I imagine teenage drinking is much easier these days thanks to the above :)

I've never seen an adult store check age in the Netherlands. Children just aren't interested until they're ready for it. I assume a store owner is legally in the clear when serving a five year old, even if in practice they would ask for their caretaker's phone number and send them home.

Is that actually required and enforced in the USA?
