I literally did this.

Ha! From your surname I'm assuming you have some ties to India? There are companies that specialise in medical tourism but I wonder how feasible it would be for an individual who was completely unfamiliar with India.

You are correct about my ties to India but it is super feasible for someone without any ties.

The one thing I would stress is to do your research before going and find a credible medical centre. Booking appointments in India for dentists or doctors is pretty painless — very often you can get seen for a consultation in the same day, sometimes within minutes.

The one benefit of having ties to the country is that I have family on the ground whom already know of reputable doctors/dentists which makes it easy to avoid the horror stories (which are in the minority).

To clarify my experience: I had a root canal in the UK after being attacked with a weapon which crushed my front teeth.

I regularly got abscesses in the area for years and they were always treated with antibiotics and a pat on the head.

It flared up while I was visiting family in a very small village in Punjab and they sent me to their dentist.

It turned out that the dentists in the UK had been wrongly diagnosing and treating what turned out to be a root canal which was not properly completed (the dentist failed to remove the entire root).

This lead to an infection which grew over the period of roughly 12 years and spread into the actual bone of my jaw, eating away at it.

I needed a re-canal and an operation to remove the infection. Over the course of two weeks I had the operation and re-canal completed for roughly £50.

It’s been two years and there have been no problems at all.

But that covers your healthcare. No copays, deductibles, flat rate for all prescriptions of £9.50 per item (or £10.40 a month for 10 months for a prepayment certificate that covers as many items as needed). Insurance is also less, both contents and car insurance. Utilities a lot lower (fast internet for £30 a month, sim only contract with 50GB of 5G data for £15 a month). There is this strange idea that the UK is sup…

Which has now collapsed so in practice you need to go private if you need any kind of decent, timely care. And it never covered dentistry from what I’ve heard. In practice you end up paying twice - once in taxes…

It's not collapsed. My father had a TIA a few months ago, the ambulance was there in minutes, and he was treated in hospital and has made a full recovery.

If you have a life-threatening issue, MI, stroke, cancer - you will be seen quickly and the standard of care is similar to the US.

If you need something treating that is non-life-threatening, yes, you may need to wait some time.

Don't get me wrong, the NHS is being handled appallingly by the current ruling party, but it is not collapsing - thanks to the doctors, nurses and support staff going above and beyond to keep it running.

Sure, but there are plenty of anecdotes about ambulances taking hours to arrive right now, as well.

"Life-threatening" is also too fuzzy of a term, here. Don't get me wrong -- I'm an immigrant to the UK from the US, and I think things are better here for most people -- but mental health issues, gender-affirming care, etc. are not treated as life-threatening even when they genuinely are, and care is nearly impossible to get in a timely manner. I'm not especially well-connected to the trans community, but I have some friends who are, and it's quite common for trans people in the UK to move to the US because they can access care much easier and much faster.

Additionally, objective measures of wait times show them increasing unsustainably right now. :(

I'd be reasonably certain that $100k in the Bay Area would leave you with pretty much the same lifestyle you describe here in London. There is quite a gap between London and the UK as a whole, for better and for worse.

Are they paying 100k in the Bay Area or more upwards of 200k?

In tech (which is what is relevant to this post), pay is much higher in US tech hubs than it is in London. I had to move from tech to finance (still in a tech role) in order to get anywhere near my Seattle-based tech salary when I moved to London.

> They specifically mention being paid £55k as being equivalent to $100k in the US. It isn’t. I think you're missing some benefits. I don't know anything specific about this job offer and what would be on the paper offer, but UK public sector offers quite insane benefits compared to private sector, where salary might be like 50-60% of total compensation. Some I'm failiar with: free access to public nurseries (normal…

You do not get free nursery, gyms or car parking in UK public sector...

Yeah I’m not sure if it is just one section of the public sector this poster is referring to but my sister is a teacher at GCSE level and gets none of this.

One of my best friends is a paramedic and has decided to quit and leave the country due to the shocking pay and working conditions. He has to bail on so many social events as he constantly gets assigned to unrelenting shifts with no notice at all.

The idea that your pay reflects your use to society is pretty eccentric.

Welcome to the free market and economic utility.

It might represent your value in the free market in terms of economic utility, but that doesn't reflect your value to society. There are things in this world outside of pure economic measurement.

There sure are such things, however labour for hire is not one of them.

Fair, but I'm also sick of hearing Facegoogs whining on this app (and Blind, and elsewhere) about how they're only barely scraping by on $250k and how could anyone ever live on $100k poverty wages. They have to do adtech to survive, don't you see?

250k in the bay area with family is ok but it isn't great. You can live on it but people want nice houses and schools for their kids,etc... so I get where they're coming from. Even for the single people they wanna retire early or whatever. Everyone has different goals I guess

" but people want nice houses and schools for their kids,etc...

Where they're coming from is greed. We don't need to indulge this nonsense.

What if I told you I'm barely scraping by on $5 million TC because hey, do you know how much private jets cost? I can't even buy one outright, you know? I have to lease mine on a time share. It's absolutely embarrassing. My kids get made fun of when I drop them off in Geneva for their ski trip with a rented jet.

Are you saying you would rather be that janitor than make decent money to support yourself/family? If so, by all means. I don't think most people agree with you though. Or maybe they do, what do I know.

I'm saying everyone who works at NASA, from the infosec people to the people scrubbing the floor contributes to the mission. Lots of worthless startups blather on about their "mission" (~~organize the world's info~~ sell more ads) but NASA means it.
