This was my first thought as well. The ELIZA I am familiar with is nowhere near sophisticated enough to have this sort of effect.

Eh, it was the original therapy chatbot. Focused on Rodgerian psychotherapy. I'm not even sure ChatGPT existed two years ago. It seems like a very odd story. I wonder what the core facts are.

3. What did he actuly read in these conversations? - was it really that harmful to drive someone into suicide?

#160 mention of why the Chatbot is the reason he killed himself. Not saying it is untrue but without anything describing what conversations took place this just seems like fearmongering.
I imagine the medical industry is patiently waiting for GPT to misdiagnose someone and they die. Then they can push for legislation to entrench their monopoly further.
(Which ignores the multi million misdiagnosis Physicians do every year, but fear and lobbying is a powerful motivator)

This doesn't make sense, Eliza is a very old pattern matcing chatbot, and even if someone used a name for something new, ChatGPT is not two years old.
Sounds like they mixed up their buzzwords.
Still a tragedy, automated tools are probably the worst way to deal with this.
