While FSR isn't a standard, AMD at least put effort into getting it working on competing Nvidia cards. Yes, things mostly work when you install the Nvidia Linux drivers. But even on a Ubuntu LTS I've had updates break the Nvidia driver, sleep is a 50/50 toss up whether it resumes broken too. I agree that you shouldn't use nvidia if you want any distro that prefers libre software. For most regular users it's just fine, except for wayland as you said. I wonder if nvidia has any plans w.r.t wayland support. Everything still works with X but wayland has finally shaped up to probably displace it.

The one major downside I'm experiencing using an Nvidia card (980 Ti), is sleep/resume not working. eg at resume time the screen rarely powers back on, then the system hard locks with the kernel traceback indicating an nvidia problem

The whole power off/power on thing instead doesn't take all that long, but it would be more convenient to just have a working sleep/resume.

I mostly stream to "dumb" devices connected directly to a display. I hate smart TVs. You can still use a remote and stuff by just opening `youtube.com/tv` in the browser and you can even use a remote/phone to control it.

For mobile you can use ReVanced.

Perhaps this[0] plugin will help? It's only for Firefox but I'm sure there are equivalents for other browsers. You can set a plethora of options, including auto-selecting playback quality of videos, playlists, pop-up players, embedded videos, when in full-screen mode and more. I've been using this extension for years and consider it a must-have. It turns the hot mess that YT has become into a decent experience. The site says it's available on Chrome and Edge, as well.

It would be cool if there was a way to upscale old Brood War videos to look as if it was being played on the new Remastered edition. I'm not sure if the technology is quite at that point yet, but it seems like an increasingly tractable problem.

I choose to pay for YouTube Premium to support the content creators. I doubt they will get paid if I used an ad blocker.
