The real reason is that newer versions of iPhone have been utterly meh. Absolutely no new innovations. The screen looks dated. The design is tired. The camera tech has plateaued. Storage sizes have plateaued. Battery life has plateaued. CPU improvements have lost any meaning for the average user, given apples inability to write software that takes advantage of the gains.
So why should I drop $1000 for no meaningful improvement or added use case? If I'm gonna spend that much money I'd rather try the folding phone from Samsung. It's got something new.

I have the opposite perception of prices. I can buy a $700 to $1,000 iPhone 13 mini or iPhone 13, and I know it will work well and receive software updates for at least 5 years. I know this because of many years of experience, and I am using an iPhone XS from 2018 right now. Unfortunately, I bought my 12 mini long ago and it's still going strong, and my friend bought the version without satellite because he didn't even know that was an available feature. So good feature, zero uptake. Blame marketing.

It’s also incomplete because iPhones are much faster and historically have been supported years longer: if you had $200 for a phone, buying an iPhone two generations back will likely get you the same number of years of use. There’s something like a 4 year gap between Apple’s CPU performance and everyone else when it comes to single-threaded performance, and that’s what people notice the most since it affects things like browser speed and people buying cheap phones probably aren’t playing demanding games which are aggressively multicore.

It’s important to remember that those were largely media creations, not something which affected a large number people or were problems specific to iPhones. There were so many angry tirades about throttling on degraded batteries which never mentioned that everyone does it because the alternative is the device suddenly shutting off.
