For now -- but possibly not in 2024. I would go higher. At least 24 GB if you're buying an M2 Pro.

Renters insurance is cheap piece of mind for stuff like laptops, or bikes you lock up publicly. Regular backups of course too.

Last time I was looking into this (Lemonade) any expensive electronics had to be covered separately by the $, at additional cost.

I do pay separately for things like my roadbike, camera, laptop, etc, and for these things to not have a deductible, but all in I am only paying like $15 a month for my entire renters insurance policy.

What laptop would you recommend that use DC dimming with OLED? Also, does this compromise color accuracy? (I was under the impression that PWM was used with OLED partly because OLED's color accuracy diminishes at lower brightness levels, but I'm not sure where I read that.)

My wife had hers placed on a lectern and someone bumped into to and it fell off stage, bigger dent but the show went on. And our kid has sat on or stepped on both multiple times. Interesting that you though his reasoning was about accidental damage and not thieves.

Oh, yeah, I don’t live in SF. Theft isn’t common enough to be a big deal in my city in India, but Apple’s anti theft is pretty good either way.

Give Windows 10 or 11 a try. It cured me of this feeling. The adverts in particular.

Thank you! I have turned off a lot of background helpers from apps I don't use anymore and removed some search result types. Docker was in the background helpers multiple times. Let's see how much this helps. In activity monitor, I also saw that Steam and iStat Menus both hand an "impact" of 50 which made them the top 2, the next had an "impact" of 5.

This might be an old issue, but try turning of the hard drive space indicator in iStats Menu. It was a major drain for me a couple years ago. After a restart, energy use went way down.

How would this compare with the best current intel based laptop (running linux). Primarily cost-wise and computational performance wise. The comparisons offered are with previous macbook models and that is not particularly interesting or illuminating if you are not an existing user.

The best Linux option laptop at the moment are probably lenovo thinkpad z13 and z16 with 6xxx AMD Ryzen CPUs.

Thanks for sharing all these! I'm in total agreement with you that there's an insane amount of cool stuff and innovation happening in the OEM laptop/tablet/hybrid space.

But I'm still really concerned about the consistency of hibernation and sleep so I'm not taking a searingly hot machine out of my bag at 1% battery life. Or the weird quirks of some new hinge or keyboard design that I have to live with for 4+ years of owning a machine.

I'd honestly take half the specs and double the thickness/weight if it meant that my keyboard felt like a keyboard and that I can confidently close the lid at any time and re-open it back to whatever I was doing.

I don't _like_ Apple. But they can do that. And I don't even have to compromise on anything except using macOS (which I can tolerate).
