Does it work with non-Apple hardware? Amazon and Google have the "works with Amazon/Google" so you can buy any brand of hardware (smart plugs for ex) and control them all with one device.

Yeah, I'm a little confused as to what's actually new here from the video? I assume a newer chipset but it's not really clear what else has changed?
The size. Apple discontinued the OG size HomePod a while back, and sold only the tiny baseball-sized ones. This is a re-introduction of a larger-size, better-sounding device that I assume is essentially the same form factor as the original one.

The homepod had too much bass for me to comfortably use it in my apartment. At a decent listening volume, the bass was overwhelming. EQ only worked for music streamed via Apple Music at the time. Is this supposed to sound better than the original version? I bought two of them on sale one time (for like $250 each?) and planned to use them as a stereo pair. But when I tested them against the (very old) Bose Wave Radio that we were previously using, it wasn't clear that they were any better. They certainly weren't $500 better, so I returned them.

I might try it with the stereo setup for the home cinema tv setup. I agree on everything about Siri. Though in the kitchen I bought those 100 bucks Ikea Sonos made speakers that sound amazing too. Much cheaper... One issue though is that I can not pass thru audio over the Apple TV, so the cinema setup would only work when using the Apple TV.
This should work if you enable ARC (must be enabled on Apple TV settings, and on your HDMI switching device. You also need to use an ARC compatible HDMI cable and to be using the ARC port on your "switching" device, since often there is only one such port. This is how I have it set up and my HomePod outputs all inputs that come into my TV.
Why don’t they stick an Airport or Time Capsule in these things? Even with the pretty lousy Siri performance, I’d buy a couple of these if they could simultaneously solve my WiFi and backup needs. Matter is certainly taking its time coming into existence!
You're right. The switches I bought with Matter support are from Eve. Previously the Eve devices have only been supported through their own app on iOS, and that was the only reason to be able to read the kWh usage. I hope the Matter support will let me access it from my other devices.
