I think you misread the parent post? Obviously if parent expects "text Mom" to call Mom, not Dad, then the poster has explicitly set one to Mom and the other to Dad.

It’s unclear if the parent post meant that they have two contacts named “Mom and Dad” or if they are two separate contacts appropriately named.

The reason is that Apple wants a cut of the Spotify subscription money when users sign up for Spotify on an iOS or iPadOS device. IMHO, it's a bad look for Apple. They should either get out of the music business or stop taking a cut of the money from apps that compete with Apple services.

Do you have a source for that? As far as I'm aware, that has nothing to do with it -- e.g. Spotify is allowed on iOS as it is.

I cannot get siri to text my Mom. I say “text Mom” and it would respond “what do you want to say to Dad?”. Both my parents are explicitly set to be Mom and Dad in my contacts, but Siri has its own logic for determining who I mean as “mom” or something. Siri is the worst part of the Apple ecosystem by far.

Create separate contacts for each of your parents with their real names. Then, go into your contact card (aka “My Card”) and relate your parent’s contacts, one as mother, the other as father under “related names”. This will let Siri, and the rest of the system, know who your parents are. Also make sure that in Settings -> Siri & Search -> My information, you have the right contact card selected for yourself.

Matter is certainly taking its time coming into existence!

You're right.

The switches I bought with Matter support are from Eve. Previously the Eve devices have only been supported through their own app on iOS, and that was the only reason to be able to read the kWh usage.

I hope the Matter support will let me access it from my other devices.

I was not expecting that, but I'm in, I'll buy a pair for my office stereo then move my office HomePod to the lounge.

I bought the first HomePod when they first came out and I heard it in the apple store and couldn't believe a single speaker was producing that sound. I use it constantly to play music in my office, set reminders and timers, asking about the weather and controlling the lights. I seem to be lucky in that Siri mostly understands what I'm saying.

This is once piece of tech I just take for granted, it does what it does very well with no fussing. I'm really happy to see Apple bring out a new version.

For me a smart speaker has to be a very good speaker first as my primary use for it is listening to music. Everything else is just icing on the cake and only really saves me from picking up my phone and authenticating to it to use Siri.

Whenever I'm doing laundry, I try to set a timer for 50 minutes and it always thinks I said 15 minutes... it really gets on my nerves. I have to pronounce the individual digits to get it to behave correctly.

I stopped using round numbers for that reason. Say 51 instead of 50 as a workaround. It’s really annoying.

I haven’t looked into it in a while. I guess it changed between 2019 and 2021.

Thank you. This is a perspective that is often overlooked. We all know the shortcomings of software engineering - why are we blaming the user first?

A suggestion to fix it isn’t “blaming the user.” I’ve had to retrain mine. It’s annoying that it failed and I had to do it, but I’m also glad I spent 20 seconds fixing it instead of worrying about blame.

With respect, I'd just like to add that this is the company that famously said "You're holding it wrong". Voice assistants fail in surprising and strange ways. Retraining might help, it might not.
