The form-based approach is fine if you like that kind of thing, or just have 1-2 W2s.

Paid Tax-prep software is "worth it" because it simplifies the whole process.

But again, nothing wrong with filling out the forms yourself if you like that kind of thing.

For me: I have a Macbook Air M1 2020 and a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 7th Gen (4 years old!) running Linux Mint. I have upgraded the Thinkpad's Battery, RAM (16GB), and SSD (500GB) for the cost of the parts. That is not how the economics of laptops work.

Most people don't want a Linux laptop. Call it inertia, but it is a fact that most people buy Windows laptops.

Most of the premium market consumers prefer Apple.

And most people who prefer Linux aren't paying a premium right now.

So you have three sets that do not overlap, and there is nothing the community can do about that in the short to medium term, anyway.

That's sounds like the PSU spec. They could have clocked it significantly higher than laptop for perf but I expect it to be in the M1 Mac mini range power consumption wise.

I still use a 2012 air. It has been demoted in the food chain (so no longer main laptop), but it’s mind blowing how well it still works for basic browsing. Maybe time I replace with a 14” MBP. If that one lasts another 11 years I’m happy.

My motivation for the new air was that I was tired of investing in replacement batteries for the 2013 air. Otherwise, it is pretty much fine for most tasks. Though, not having the fan constantly cranking is nice!

Battery swelling = battery replacement. I suggest you replace the battery. Don't wait, as swollen batteries can explode. Apple will charge $200 to replace, or try a local authorized dealer. You can try install the battery yourself by ordering from iFixit. If I were you, I would just get a refurbished M1 MacBook Air from Apple, instead of spending $200 on the battery.

Thanks I honestly didn't know. Spending a few hundred isn't a problem thankfully.

First, as raincom mentioned, an expanding battery is a major concern. I'd recommend putting it somewhere fireproof immediately (such as in a metal trash can, or on a concrete pad), and making a plan to have the battery removed and properly disposed of in the near future. Yes. Actually, that's most of my days too, as I rarely have a cellphone turned on, even when I'm at home. I've done my best to remove that from my life.

So that's also true when I leave home, except in super specific circumstances.

I think I might be able to, even if they don't guarantee service? TBH I don't care about that much: if an emergency happens to me, either I'll be unconscious and someone else will have to call 911 for me anyway, or I'll remain conscious and then I can decide what to do.

Most of them do, but I don't like looking for the password/asking for it/fighting connectivity issues. It's too much of a hassle.

Instead, I type Win-A, click on "cellular" - and that's it: I'm online and everything works! Even if I only took my laptop and paid for a coffee! If offers a unique peace of mind: no distractions, no interruptions!

I don't remember the exact price, but quite cheap, about 20 a month. I mostly use it for ssh outside home.

It's just data, as voice requires some specific audio and call routing that's tricky. But if you use skype or google voice, you can do voicecalls.

Yes, but that difference isn't Apple's fault, only the 5% they add on top. Every product you buy in Europe is more expensive because of the higher VAT.
