The Median Voter Theorem does predict that they'd reach for the most conservative centrists, but that's an overly naive model for the short term. It may well work in the long term, but in the short term they can try to get higher voter turnout among people who are nominally their supporters anyway -- a thing not modeled in the math of the Median Voter Theorem.
