So..... I know this is going to kick off a flamewar (I apologize in advance, dang) but I have a serious question. It looks like the "controversy" was links to a site that included anime child porn (or what some people would call that, regardless of your personal interpretation). I've been to Japan and wandered around some manga stores, and.... what they have on some shelves is, like, really, viscerally, incredibly, d…

> like, really, viscerally, incredibly, disgustingly, way way worse than anything I have ever seen on the internet

> in Japan, that kind of stuff seems, if not totally normal, at least acceptable enough to be included in stores along with other regular manga.

This part gets me puzzled often. It seems the problem is child part than porn part, and as a Japanese I don't see that much child content(obviously ignoring defenses like "500-year-old loli" or "blurring makes it not porn"), especially in the low ranges that attract offenders I read about on news. What seems to be the case to me, is that Western gut feeling massively under-report ages for Japanese and/or anime faces, or has a threshold point for adults set decades too high.

With a hypothetical that such guessing error exists, Q2 leads to another question: "Assuming there are some visual representations that are universally immoral across societies, should certain groups of people who visually appear immoral by certain cultural norms, be regulated by which standards and why" - it sounds extreme(it is), but I have seen this "visually immoral" class of people and drawings on the internet, and that is kind of a legitimate human rights issue that a class by appearance exists; it's no different from debating whether to tolerate blacks and their pictures.

Hi, so I looked at the links in the above post and while cartoony they are clearly not okay. It's not a "normie" take that we shouldn't sexualize children, even if they are animated.

Are we looking at the same images? What’s sexual about https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Kahsolt/stable-diffusion-w... ? I was expecting some of the horrible stuff I’ve seen on 4chan, not something you might see in a mainstream (bad) anime. If anything, it looks like the AI cleaned it up and made it more presentable.

Yeah, there's rarely the "disgusting child porn that sexualize minors" that people swear on bible to have seen it where they've seen it. It's always chalked up to "local cultural tolerances for molesting children" but ... almost feels like reading the SCP-040-JP creepypasta.

> and may carry individual consequences. Ah! Love the chilling effects you give off, dear shadowgovt! In seriousness, more instances of opaque censorship/cancellation will lead to more attrition of centralized platforms already collapsing under their own weight.

No doubt. But "the rats scurry into the dark" has never been sufficient justification to stop shining light. As a recent concrete (though anecdotal) example, there is rumor going around that folks on Mastodon are finding it much harder to do Twitter-style brigading and harassment, because the threat of node-level defederation provides incentive to keep clean houses. Admins who don't want to be defederated police thei…

Hasn't that developed into one Fediverse per continent? Many major instances seems to defederate with alt-right instances and porn-infested instances, except they seem to correspond to EU, NA and JP.

With the 2nd and 3rd largest along half of top 10 being such "global pariah" instances, it isn't convincing to me that the Fediverse has a working fine grain federation control but seems like there are just handful disjoint Fediverses.

Banning and removing links to illegal content: fine Banning and removing links to content you personally find morally objectionable: not fine It's not that complicated.

Sounds good, yet real life is more complicated * many governments will call illegal whatever they want. Will you happily enforce governmental censorship? * even if government acts in good faith, there is no good definition of porn. At some point some person will have to look at a picture and *personally* categorize it as porn / not porn (I guess first point doesn't make sense, since it's not a question of preference,…

As yes the "it's hard so why even bother" argument, tired.

And indeed, that might be working as intended.

The Facebook / Twitter / TikTok "everyone under one tent" experiments may not reflect the best solution for what a social network should look like.

There are several projects for hentai, etc. Wanting to making pornography is perfectly normal and healthy; that's not something I consider icky. When I quoted "icky stuff" I thought we were talking about the generation of underage subjects.

> underage subjects

Have you seen ANY legal age subjects? Subjectively, how much fraction of anime pictures do you consider to be portraying individuals able to consent?

I mean, if there was an NN code that is returning 0.0120000 for 85% in inference data but ranging evenly between 0.0 to 1.0 in training, intuition shouldn't be that it's the reality that is broken.

Maybe, but it looks weird to be always blaming that the other twos are organizing civil unrest, than to be clear that the networks are split.

I am really surprised at the reaction on HN. So what's the state of things, open racism is fine so long as you are a really smart programmer? Please educate me on what I am missing here, it seems everyone is in agreement that this person is racist and hosted repos reflecting their views and not just HN but Github are ok with this. I am honestly asking here, my understanding has to be wrong right? If so what am I miss…

Trying to figure out where the racism allegations come from. Do you mean this?

If so, lol.

That's called source hut ( https://sourcehut.org ), which I use with great delight.

SourceHut will ban you for being racist too. Or anything the founder thinks seems bigoted enough. [1] [1]: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33418598

If GitHub can suspend accounts because of "links on wiki led to sites that contained pictures that didn't align with github's values"[0] (as we have seen with AUTOMATIC1111 [1]), Source Hut can reject service to anyone they want. It's their business and their decision.

At least the owner (Drew) is direct and honest about it.

We, as consumers have the right to not make business with companies which we don't like, too. I have left GitHub over Copilot issue for example.

If you don't agree with views or ToS of Source Hut, don't use it. It's that simple.

Some models are used to generate nakes bodies (both of the sexual and artistic nature). Apparently there were link(s) to page(s) that contained samples of the results one can create using those models. Github does not allow for pornography, so this was an oversight to say the least.

The way I would interpret such a rule if I read one, is that they want to (1) Prevent github itself from becoming a pornsite - as in people going to raw.github.com/something/ to rub one out (2) Prevent github from being used to promote onlyfans etc. Links to a model that can be used to generate naked bodies is indirect enough that I wouldn't have figured it broke the rule. Of course now we know straight from the hors…

There are repos such as https://github.com/syaning/awesome-frontend, https://github.com/shahedbd/awesome-project-management, etc. that are just curated lists of links. I can't imagine github enjoying someone creating a awesome-naked-people list, so they likely need to have those broad rules.
