Do we really want Github regulating links in repos based purely on the moral instincts of random support employees? Seems weird. It's just a link, and not even to illegal content (AFAIK, I didn't actually follow them).
Do we really want GitHub to enforce its terms of service? Yes. Absolutely. If GitLab wants to be the site for projects that link to suspect anime porn, that's their prerogative. But so is GitHub's not to be that site. There are plenty of things that aren't illegal that a site might not want its users to link to. Appeal to legality is not just a red herring, it's also an incredibly weak argument.
I disagree. American people and sites oscillate between moralism (generally) and prurience (maybe only on the left), and I'd prefer those that are designed as technical platforms to do less editorializing. Not everyone shares a moral code. Hell, today I don't necessarily have the morals that I had myself yesterday.

So it wasn't the fact that large swaths of the wiki, or the sample images for the extensions are using images that are obviously stand ins for lolicon? There's so much icky stuff going on in the generative art community and no one knows just how deep that rabbit hole goes. Isn't this kind of obvious though? Money grubbing management wants to ensure you're not using their product to promote a competing product. What is a competing product? Anything that takes a user away from spending time on their product. Spending time with family is a competitor. Driving to work is a competitor. Maybe not for those exact reasons, but by limiting links, you lower your liability. If people are associating a site with the linked sites, then you can try to remove that association by removing the links.
The question wasn't about GitHub's specific reasons. The question was "war on hyperlinks" which is a much more general/broad question.

Hi, so I looked at the links in the above post and while cartoony they are clearly not okay. It's not a "normie" take that we shouldn't sexualize children, even if they are animated.

I was expecting some of the horrible stuff I’ve seen on 4chan, not something you might see in a mainstream (bad) anime.

There's probably a co-function of the paradox of tolerance that says something of the form "to regulate something it must be described," which (not unlike the paradox) doesn't imply you don't regulate it.
Blocking the links is a good call for minimizing the odds of stumbling into them. Choosing to scroll through such content once it has been flagged is an individual choice and may carry individual consequences.

I don't want GitHub regulating links, but I still want them to reserve this power. You have no idea how many links to child porn people start to publish when you have any website with user-generated content
For a while I ran one of those 'online image resize' services.
I kept debug logs for 7 days of user uploads (and so the users download link would be valid for the same time).
It really amazed me what proportion was porn. Like a good 30% of uploads.
How can so many people need their jpeg porn pictures upscaled?!?
