Tailoring your CV, in my experience, simply means looking at the job description and then rearranging your achievements so that the things they are specifically asking for are mentioned at the top. Also make sure you use the same language as them and specifically mention the exact technology they put in the job description. I do this, then I make a copy of the CV as MyName_CompanyName.pdf in my Documents directory so…

I second this. I find that the investment here is well worth it -- in general it takes me 15-30 minutes to read the job description, read up a bit on the company itself, and adjust the resume. I haven't personally tried the spray-and-pray approach.

It's also not something that requires a bunch of mental energy, so you can do it in the late evening when your brain is tired from the full day anyway.

Gender identity is frequently visible. I don't think many people are going to fraudulently represent their gender identity for a misguided chance at a job.

True but I can't imagine a company calling someone on it. Too explosive of a topic.

This. If that is 100x clicks on Apply button on jobs portal, then no wonder the result is mediocre. Tailoring CV to a role, looking for some insider friends to let then collect the referal bonus... that takes time but is much more effective to put foot in the door.

I meant not to make friends from strangers, but to look for friends/connections who you know already at the company. Referal bonus is an extra for them. I recruited and cashed bonus by bringing a couple of my pro friends this way. But you need network for that.

Keep your head up and in mind its allmost christmas and in december basicallly nothing much happens ever. ;)

As for external recruiters: remember their job is not to be there for you. They usually only eat when they fill positions and there is ABSOLUTELY NO entry requirement to become a recruiter.

If you’re a FAANG level developer (very top of your field) then surely you’ve got a network of people you can ask for a job anytime rather than having to apply as normal? I’m not even remotely FAANG level but if I wanted a job I’d email some people I know or Tweet that I’m looking - not fill in a form. Have you tried working your network? Emailing some friends?

Err this is obviously a bit of a thread now, but the point of my post wasn't asking for help, but rather pointing out that frustrations with the market, and the front door, as it were, are universal.

In the UK the market is pretty dumb. Folks are mainly looking for reasons to exclude you rather than focusing on the positives. Ergo, I fire and forget resumes and only really put effort into the ones that come back positively.

When I get past the gate keepers, I almost always get an offer.

So my point is, "hang in there".

That is the case when hiring entry level and junior, but a senior level should be able to hit the ground running on at least one part of the job requirement.

Agreed, that is true. A senior does not need to meet all requirements but at least 1 or 2, yeah.

Exactly. Taking the market and supply and demand as justification when salaries are low and complaining when the price is too high for their taste.
