AFAIK you can block individual users, entire servers, and servers can also block other bad rep servers. I think a federation of servers with open source software is better equipped to fight fake news and bots not in spite of but because of decentralized protocols and how solutions must involve democratic values by definition.

To start, you should choose an instance that had been around for a while and isn't too small. Instances do shutdown occasionally but the admin(s) will give you plenty of time to migrate to a new instance. Mastodon has built-in tools to migrate your whole account (and content) to another instance if needed. I'm currently having to do that because a large well-established instance (mastodon.technology) is shutting down…

that seems like a big assumption - if I'm running an instance, what's to stop me pulling the plug with zero notice?

No. People don’t want Conservatives to have a voice.

They have a voice. What they don’t have any more is the privilege to use it without any consequences.

“More open” as owned by a billionaire extremist that promised to destroy moderation efforts that weren’t even good to begin with. People in the US have a weird notion of what “open” means.

Admins share lists of extremist instances and block them. This strategy helps to not viralize hateful/illegal content.

Which server?

Synapse needs dual core with 8GB ram. You don't call that inconvenient?

Even then you might have timeouts joining some rooms.

Most will not meet that spec and won't be able to join popular rooms.

God help you should you not replace the standard sqlite dB.

I’m old enough to remember when that was an excuse people used for Twitter. Funny, seems like months ago. Now, it’s a private company but the arguments are all different.

a publicly traded company. not exactly the same as its current status.
