Not really, no. Imagine the reversed situation: Everyone is on Mastodon, and now this cool new thing called "Twitter" comes along and some people are switching to it. "find everyones Twitter account and follow it" would still be a useful thing to have, over manually checking for every single person you follow if they have an account, if they maybe have an account with a different username, ... and following those you…

For only username based have a look at Fedifinder: https://fedifinder.glitch.me/

that seems like a substantially more useful way of building such a thing

Yeah, it is not about a whole social network being controlled by a single person. It is about a whole social network being controlled by a single person you disagree with .

You don't have to disagree with Elon as a person or politically to feel that an open speech platform controlled by one person who is known to micromanage everyone around him is bad. The tweets about Pelosi should that he is absolutely open to using his power as a prominent figure to control the narrative long outside his area of expertise

Tweeting isn't controlling any narrative. If you ban one side and not the other, and suppress stories you don't like, that's more along the lines you're talking.

I think "More open Twitter" is a red herring. The bigger issue seems to be that people simply dislike and distrust Musk.

I think that's a vocal minority. The majority doesn't care, and two equally small, vocal minority groups love and hate him, respectively

For what I see from Twitter, I'd say Twitter is the vocal minority.

I use Twitter to follow fellow engineers and honestly all the politics (regardless of the new guy in charge) was getting annoying. I might as well use this opportunity to become more active on mastadon. Can anyone recommend a good android client? Preferably from f-droid?

I can recommend Tusky or the official Mastodon app. Both are available in F-Droid.

Likewise, gmail would be totally useless if it was actually centralized and you couldn't email non gmail users.

But they can’t necessarily email you, given Google’s procedures regarding “spam”, i.e. anything from a small email server.

Yet my bank(s), linkedin, netflix, microsoft and a bunch of mailers all had message arrive in my inbox this morning.

If Mastodon takes off because of Musk ill be pretty amused. There is an irony to Mastdon, a more open platform than Twitter, becoming more popular because people thought Musk would make Twitter... more open.

For me it is how one person can suddenly own an entire social network and dictate the rules as he likes or dislikes. Mastodon it self is more open, the server you choose to sign up to might have content policies in place.

It's a private company.

You have to only care about it now.

We need to reduce harmful information. Only experts on A may speak about it. Experts are decided by trustable media outlets.

Who determines what is a "trustable media"? Who watches the watchdog? Etc.
