Well BRICS is a thing, I wouldn't expect Brazil to break in solidarity.

> Well BRICS is a thing, I wouldn't expect Brazil to break in solidarity. BRICS is a thing the way FAANG is a thing, not the way NATO is a thing. Solidarity is not one of its features.

In the past no. But in the future there is possibility of using a "basket of currencies" to replace USD for intra-brics trading.

Do you have any evidence of fraud?

The problem with electronic voting is that it's either impossible or extremely unlikely to prove either way. Germans and many others have banned them for that reason.

The electronic voting system is auditable though:

There are many valid criticisms against this system. It not being opensource, it's audit process being very restrictive etc... There is a nice presentation following a conclusion of a vulnerability test that highlight many of the issues: https://youtu.be/4MgsGdbtf6o

But this impossibility you claim is just nonsensical.

So important for the environment and planet. Bolsonaro would have equaled the death of the Amazon as a rainforest. The Amazon is already close to the tipping point of becoming a savanna and net carbon emitting system. Think this doesn't matter to people in the US? Well, turns out the rain in the Midwest of the United States comes from the Amazon rainforest. The planet is intricately intertwined and we do not truly un…

Bulshit. Deforestation was at record levels during Lula’s first terms.

Please don’t normalize the election of a criminal.

The fact that the result was so close is chilling. How bad do populists have to be to not be re-elected?

Can we stop equating populism with fascism? Populism can be good, actually. Lula is arguably a populist.

Lula is a populist and a fascist. His campaign ran on a platform of “regulating the media” and has succeeded in censoring a major news channel and the release of a documentary film about the attempt to murder the president in the previous election.

If I was Brazilian I would never support Bolsanaro, but he was right about the electronic voting machines. It is shocking to me that there is not a paper record for each cast vote in Brazil.

I find that silly, what do you mean there's no paper record? Each machine has a print out of the total votes it has in it. These machines are also not connected to the internet. And lastly, he sure didn't have a problem with the machines for the several years he was in office, right? Only now that someone was polling better than him. I find the Brazilian electronic voting machines to be better than how we do it in th…

If the printing can’t be verified by the person right after voting, it’s useless.

He did have a problem with the machines for a long time, and so did other candidates and parties. It was them who changed their stance to avoid being on the same side as Bolsonaro.

Would you not support him even if the other option was a criminal?

Yes, he is right about the problems of a nonexistent paper trail of votes.

It's interesting reading these comments. Many commenters (who I assume are mostly from North America and Europe) are relieved that Lula won and seem to view Bolsonaro as a repulsive authoritarian. This view is the view that is implicitly espoused by all mainstream Western media outlets, such as the New York Times and the Guardian. However, some commenters seem to view Lula as a corrupt politician, essentially nothing more than a crook. This view, while prevalent in Brazil, has not been given nearly as much attention outside Brazil. As a non-Brazillian who has not followed these events closely, it is hard to speak definitely to the character of Lula, but it is certainly striking to see how diametrically opposed these two sets of comments are.

Worth noting that Lula is more pro-russian than bolsonoro and blames zelensky for the war equally. The coming decade is going to be as profound as end of world war

Well BRICS is a thing, I wouldn't expect Brazil to break in solidarity.

Awk. Looks like you're more right than wrong. https://www.reuters.com/world/lulas-ukraine-comments-are-rus...
