I got a 7 day ban for a tweet that included “political suicide pact” as an idiom. I then got permanently banned for including the line, “sending their children to die in Ukraine” in a tweet. The “appeal” button causes me to get a denied email within one minute. This tells me no humans are in the loop on any of this. I don’t think these tweets were controversial or require any diversity of viewpoints. They just requir…

A few years ago I tried to reply to a discussion with a link to the Anti-Federalist Papers, and my tweet was censored/blocked. If I recall correctly, it was labeled as misinformation or something. The censorship on Twitter goes far beyond hate speech or threats of violence.

Twitter ignored multiple reports of personal threats directed at me specifically (involving concentration camps and general death threats, etc.) "This tweet doesn't violate Twitter rules." People I didn't know, who I had zero negative interactions with before. That was way before Musk. You just can't have human moderation at that scale. They have to brainstorm how to prevent these tweets in the first place, rather th…

That’s awful. And I’ve also witnessed the same kind of abuse that goes ignored. Has any large social media site ever solved this? 4chan does by having no rules: if you show up, expect the absolute worst of humanity. Reddit does by having countless volunteer moderators who basically do 98% of the moderation. Facebook suffers from the same problems as Twitter.

> 4chan does by having no rules

It does have rules. Lots of them. To the point the place changed significantly over the years. You probably mean 8chan which had exactly one rule: don't do anything considered illegal in the USA.

Everyone seems to say there’s no moderation policy that will please everyone. Sounds right. But the real physical world has freedom of speech and it works pretty well. There’s a KKK meeting going on somewhere right now and yet none of us are bothered. Is the issue really freedom of speech or is it that Twitter puts people who would absolutely hate each other into the same room? What if you just fix that second part i…

> What if you just fix that second part instead of worrying about the first?

I think that's an entirely different product. Something closer to Discord or Telegram. Would be interesting to see a pivot along these lines.

As long as it's legal, why ban anyone? The bar should be VERY high.

Legal according to who? Different countries have different laws. As we see with India and Signal this week.

Twitter already hides tweets in specific countries based on local laws.

What's wrong with screenshots of text? They're easily readable. The white background makes things stand out more than just posting text on stock Twitter. It's one reason Insta story posts and even slides have text. Technological progress doesn't mean making user-hostile design. If users like a format or medium, you can offer it to them even if your platform is capable of greater things.

What's wrong? Everything. Screenshots of text are popular because people don't seem to be able to copy and save data anymore. Social media apps don't let users download pictures anymore. I can only share intra-platform links to content. The Instagram app won't even let me select text. People get around this insanity by screenshotting the whole screen and saving a poor quality version of the data in image form. This i…

These aren't problems with screenshots of text (although others have done a pretty good job in listing those) or even problems with computing. These are problems with shitty social media platforms that want to take control from their users, and with the users who accept those kinds of limitations. Stop using bad user-hostile platforms and they'll either improve to win back users or they'll become obsolete and die as people flock to better alternatives.

Don’t even get me started with screen recording on a phone. At least on Apple if any Apple Music is playing that you don’t own the mp3 for, gets scrubbed out. I only know this from trying to make a cool thing for my son. I’m so tired of the nanny shit and wish I could just go back to android.

If the offending element is one's personality or one's beliefs, then yes, one can come back by removing that, but it's the same thing as not coming back.

"You cannot believe in Christianity" and "You cannot hold mass in my house" are two very different statements.

Twitter have almost 400 million users. It's not "your house" at this point, it's public space.

The hatred exhibited in all these Twitter-related threads, both here and elsewhere is truly something to behold. In a free society everyone should be for the protection of free speech. Note that this does not mean unmitigated slinging of fecal matter. It does, however, mean that platforms with significant reach should not be engaged in explicitly favoring one side or another. They need to enabled open and "color blin…

Protection of free speech, its intent atleast, is to protect citizens from governments. Not to give citizens a free for all tongue wagging that can harm others or incite violence. Free speech is to be used against tyrannical governments. If someone is saying "jews are vermin", they absolutely have to be gagged.

This excerpt from Elon's statement to advertisers pretty much lays down the intent:

"it is important for the future of civilization to have a common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner, without resorting to violence. There is currently great danger that social media will splinter into far right wing and far left wing echo chambers that generate more hate and divide society.

In the relentless pursuit of clicks, much of traditional media has fueled and catered to those polarized extremes, as they believe that is what brings in the money, but, in doing so, the opportunity for dialogue is lost."

That is commendable. That's what we should all want.

Will it happen?

That remains to be seen. Mass hatred towards someone (and his platform) with the above stated goals is nothing less than nonsensical. This is something that should be universally celebrated.

Yeah. Next year I'll be reading about how the camera apps are detecting copyrighted content and refusing to take pictures too.

> wish I could just go back to android

Don't count on Android. Stakeholder lock down is increasing there too. Remote attestation is already a thing, soon we won't be able to run most apps if we "tamper" with the device by owning it.
