Probably not because us in the left are generally non conformist. We don't just go with the flow because we're expected or follow party lines... I'm not a Biden fan but even if Bernie had an allegation against him I'd say let's hear it and get the truth. Truth matters, facts matter, and nobody should be above the law or the TOS as it may be for a private company. Though, if they stray too far one way politically they…

> us in the left are generally non conformist That was true in the distant past, but in the past decade or two it seems to be changing from my perspective. For context, my perspective is that of an extreme libertarian who was raised and lives in a very "red" state. The major political parties offer a fair example of this - the GOP had the "Never Trumpers" who consistently and publicly opposed the party's presidential…

Dem's do not equal left unfortunately.

Dems are good at uniting, but (as a lefty myself) we are just as bad as republican's as far as infighting goes.

E: Usually we are pretty good at skipping spoiler candidates though, there is that.

> turning into a cesspit of toxicity because ‘free speech’ Twitter is already a cesspit of toxicity because of the lack of free speech. This won't make it any worse.

I don't understand how people keep conflating First Amendment Constitutional rights with the additional layer of "this is a private platform, we prefer not to have it overrun with assholes that make it really unpleasant for everyone else." 1A rights apply to GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE in your expression. There is no "lack of free speech on Twitter," nor do they owe anyone unrestricted freedom to spread disinfo and hate…

You confusion stems from conflating 1A and freedom of speech. It's reasonable to expect a corporation of Twitter's influence and size to recognise this particular human right.

Lots of people are publicly mocked on Twitter everyday. What makes "trans" people so special?

I mean, if you purposefully misgender a cis person on Twitter, the same rule applies. Not sure what your issue is

"Cis" people dont care about being misgendered.

You can expect the Donald to be unbanned. You can also expect twitter to become the same cesspool that truth social is.

Trump is in a weird position though that he can't come back to Twitter without sabotaging any value or investment he put into Truth Social since just about the only value in Truth Social is that Trump is on it.

It won’t be the first time he sank an investment. Truth be told (hah), truth social has little to no value as the main demographic is generally very poor with little disposable income, and the main content is just propaganda and dog whistling.

I'll bite.

What makes Musk "right wing"?

I get that he has some publicly stated positions that are counter to the prevailing positions of the Democratic Party, but I can't think of any that I would consider "right wing". In fact, I can't think of any that would have been out of place for a Democrat in the late 1990s or early 2000s.

If he doesn't return to Twitter by the end of the year and simply leave everyone who invested in Truth Social holding the bag, I'll eat my hat.

Alright, the why is it not "group ideology"?

This is senseless. You can just keep moving the goalpost. If I gave you arguments based on sociological consensus you'd just declare sociology woke groupthink too.

I have not moved the goal post. My objection in the original comment was that the discussion was framed in terms of musks' ideology vs the current non-ideology status quo. It wasn't Musk's beliefs, or world view, or political leaning, but his ideology.

The only reason its framed this way is since the comment I originally replied to disagrees with Musk. If he was coming in and doubling down on Twitter's choices it would suddenly stop being ideology.

Galileo wasn't really under house arrest. All he had to do was recant. The comparison seems apt because while the magnitude of the punishment is out of proportion the refusal to yield to orthodoxy by taking the simple way out is similar.

Babylon Bee isn't under house arrest. This analogy is absurd. They weren't allowed to target hate towards a specific, named individual on their Twitter account. Everything else they were saying was more or less ok. And they still had plenty of other outlets, including their very successful website. This is like a single book publisher telling Galileo, "we won't print this one page, but the rest of the book is ok".

They targeted a public person who exists at the upper echelons of power and privilege. For a group of people so obsessed with comedy only “punching up” it’s ironic to see the justification.

>exactly, so how is this any different? a black man legally changes his name because he considers his old name to be his "slave name", and almost every headline about him refuses to acknowledge this change. how is this different from Muhammad Ali? I'm not sure what this paragraph is trying to convey. Are you under the impression that Ye changed his name because it was his 'slave name'? >this is the crux of my questio…

a kid down the street from the house I grew up in moved to Hollywood to get involved in acting and changed his name but not his gender. he asked everyone to refer to him by his new name instead of his old one. how is this functionally different from someone changing their gender and their name at the same time, with regards to the name change? it doesn't matter why someone wants to change their name, they want to change their name, you should respect that.

you don't have to, of course, you can do whatever you want. but the idea that trans people get a special when-I-change-my-name-you-have-to-respect-it privilege that people who don't want to change their gender don't get access to, is completely nonsensical. you should respect the right to identity self-determination innate to all people, for whatever reason they choose, or else your moral framework is not actually cohesive at all and in fact permits granting special privileges to certain classes of people over others, which is generally understood to be bigoted, by definition.

every headline and social media post I see that contains the string "Kanye" or "Kanye West", outside of those who couch it in the context of some variation of "Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West", proves that, despite all pretenses to the contrary, there is in fact a brazen double standard when it comes to asserting one's own identity in terms of LEGALLY changing their name, and having everyone else respect it, such that trans people are supposed to get special consideration in this regard compared to everyone else, somehow.

only extremely convoluted contemporary political pseudo-logic could explain how this actually makes perfect sense, how it's okay to call him Kanye West but it's not okay to call him Ellen Page, and how those two things are Actually Completely Different Situations instead of Exactly The Same Thing.

> Are you under the impression that Ye changed his name because it was his 'slave name'?

the man has openly said as much; does his own position on his own identity not have any value to you? is that not the entire idea behind the concept of "deadnaming" to begin with?

I imagine this will do a speed run of unbanning -> turning into a cesspit of toxicity because ‘free speech’ -> lots of people leave because it’s so unpleasant. It’ll be fun to watch though, as someone that’s never valued the site.

I think you're correct. The example of the Heat Death of Usenet seems relevant. If you don't trim spam and annoyances, people leave. I think Musk's Twitter will be an interesting test, if Musk allows enough unfettered speech.

I expect that Twitter will at the very least trim crypto scam spam, especially bots that impersonate Musk himself. Would be funny if this issue stays unsolved.
