They think they would rather have rolling blackouts than go back to nuclear.
Realistically it's the factory leaving town because the electricity economics went from awesome to terrible overnight, that cheap Kay-double-you-aich (kilowatt-hour) left the Old Country and might never come back. Keep in mind these Germans, German Germans in Germany, have been selected by migration to the Americas (and Tanganika, the Carolinas, lots of places) so they're the ones who loved their village and wanted to stay. They've lived there for easily ten generations. But the kilowatt-hour tripled, there's no industry that doesn't prejudice. Like even fucking basket-weaving requires lighting to work beyond sundown. Kilowatt hours man, they're the name of the game.
So there's a choice. Dream sweet dreams of solar panels solving all your problems while you shiver and shake, suck up those blackouts while living on unemployment insurance, and maintain a positive attitude.
Or call bullshit, declare the German national character competent in ways Japan was not (I would say that particular Japanese industry got caught with its pants down for cutting corners). And that Germans in particular are capable of building reliable, solid reactors with aggressive kilowatt pricing--while at the same time not cutting a single corner on the cement, welding, metallurgy, and structural engineering. Like the culture is perfect for it, one more example is their punctuality, it's evident they can do nuclear. I think they did that for a very long time, in fact. They did not shut down due to a German accident.
