In a laptop, I care far more about battery life and the fan noise. However, Intel 12th gen is only able to pull these impressive performance feats due to very high turbo boost clocks. It's not that Intel is bad, it's still pretty great but in the age of M1 I wish Intel released a processor with similar power consumption. I use my Intel i5-1240p with turbo boost disabled when on battery. Here's the geekbench with TB d…

Re: How fast is 12th Gen Intel Core?
#182On a slightly different note, this is again a good example of how Intel continues to oneup AMD through its business and management practices, even when AMD has better products. Ofcourse AMD can't be imitate Intel in spending money and undercutting them (sometimes illegally), but they should certainly try to copy some of the decent practices of Intel, like for e.g. supporting hardware manufacturers by offering reference designs. China has many Intel tablets because of this. It is easier to develop hardware with Intel processors because Intel offers more support (free and paid). Something AMD needs to focus on more and fix. They really need to work on their PR and sales tactic.

I agree, but than you have corporate compliance installing an insane amount of Spyware on your device so that a 2021 XPS 13 Dell with a gen 10 Intel is out of battery when only using word within the hour. Fans spinning all the time and no way of disabling this madness. Nearly the same for my Mac colleagues. They maybe get 2 hours out of their M1 MBPs unplugged.
I am writing this from a M1 MBP with screen at extra full brightness (using vivid) and I can say I get way more than 2 hours from it.

I don't disagree with you that M2 is more efficient, but let's not move goal posts after saying "Performance wise, the M2 is still faster.".
I didn't move the goal post. M2 is faster in ST, GPU, AI, and video editing. It's slower on MT. To me, the M2 is overall faster. Especially when unplugged which will cause Alder Lake to significantly drop in performance. What is your definition of faster?
At least in a laptop, it's not just when you unplug the laptop that performance drops. You've also got to have enough volume in the laptop to shoehorn in a major cooling system if you're going to keep the P series processors from throttling.
For instance, Lenovo's thin and light ThinkPad X1 Yoga has two fans but still throttles:
>Unfortunately, the laptop got uncomfortably hot in its Best performance mode during testing, even with light workloads.

Or the Dell XPS 13 Plus:
>the XPS 13 Plus’ fan was really struggling here because, boy oh boy, did this thing get hot.
After a few hours of regular use (which, in my case, is a dozen or so Chrome tabs with Slack running over top), this laptop was boiling. I was getting uncomfortable keeping my hands on the palm rests and typing on the keyboard. Putting it on my lap was off the table.

Intel's P series chips in a device without a massive heat sink and fans can't hit those high clocks that their performance benchmarks rely on.

Why didn't you just move the 16GB of RAM from the 11th Gen model to the 12th Gen model? Both use DDR4 after all, don't they?
Two different people on the team running the benchmark at two different locations (the challenges of being remote-first). To be clear, had we prioritized it, we could have built two equivalent systems for this benchmark at one site. However, we are mostly focused on building products, so most of our blog posts end up being someone having a interesting topic to discuss and pulling together data and assets we have on h…
Re: How fast is 12th Gen Intel Core?
#186I think for those who primarily work on AC and do not mind increased power draw, 12th Gen is a good choice. As a software developer, I appreciate a few seconds shaved off here and there. With good thermal design, 12th Gen laptops can be silent and cool (I've never heard my MSI GT77 spin up the fans, unless I tell it to with a dedicated hardware button). I understand that people have different use cases and for lot of…

That's quite a bit more expensive than complaining on HN, or just buying a Lenovo
The HP EliteBooks (and the new Dev One Linux variant) also have trackpoints. Just in case anyone's interested in making their own though, I've seen a few DIY trackpoint projects over the years (mostly on custom mechs, not laptop keyboards though). Here's a writeup on one: https://edryd.org/posts/tp-mk/
Not anymore, they are gone with Gen 9 :(

How much corporate garbage on it, though?

#190For "Linux kernel compilation speed" they have compared a 16 GB model with 64 GB model for achieving 102.60% improvement! It's so funny =)
Yes, we intended to do an apples to apples comparison, but didn’t find the necessary units on hand when writing the post.
That should be an easy way to do an apples to apples comparison and not require shipping any hardware.
