Even beyond polynomial, if "n" is the length of the conversation so far then a brain is probably conscious in O(1) time!

We only ever have finite conversations in real life, and strictly speaking big-O notation requires arbitrary input sizes.

So any application of big-O notation to this would require some generalisation and abuse of notation. It's a bit hard to formally argue which abuse is The Right One.

What do you mean by "verified"?

We are discussing what is ultimately a matter of philosophy - "what is a useful definition of computation".

I am claiming that the model of the electron and other particles, and how they interact to form an electrical circuit with transistors, and how these electrical circuits react to current when in the pattern we call "logical gates" do not conform to what is normally understood by "computation".

I am also claiming that the ensemble formed from these logical gates does fit the concept of computation, that you couldn't derive its behavior directly from innate physical laws - the behavior is governed by the program it is manipulating, and can be changed.

Finally, I am claiming that the living cell is more similar to our CPU than to the electrical circuit or moving electrons in the way it processes DNA to produce various proteins.

Today you don't even need to do any look-up table, most short GPT-3-generated dialogues seem perfectly fine from a Turing-test perspective. That form of the Turing test stopped being useful long ago..

Still, the Turing test was never meant as a measure of "consciousness", right?

Oof that is a terrible argument.

And sorry for the swearing (depending on what cypher book you used to read that last sentence).

And ooh I revealed my HN password there for Alice or maybe Bob.

Anyway it is a bad argument because what we are saying is a hot iron is conscious because of a theoretical XOR mapping. That XOR mapping would need to be huge. And maybe that mapping is conscious. How can we know it isn’t. Although it is a snapshot of time.

We rely on memory so we can’t even be sure there is a future or past. That we are not simulated etc. There is probably an integer that represents my state. A damn large one.

You can’t boil this problem down to a proof by contradiction.

To be convinced he has to show me why we are different from digital information.

Ok then, what is the computer running that computation, and what are the symbols it is manipulating to produce the movement of the electron and photon? (I am assuming you are not referring to human knowledge of the electron or photon, which - if we accept that consciousness is computational - is obviously the result of a computation in our brains).

I think the burden is on the proponents. Otherwise anyone could make any assertion - for example, that action potentials cause consciousness, or that influx of ions cause consciousness, or that vibrations cause consciousness, or that only humans are conscious. Like "computation is consciousness" those are just all just, perhaps, correlates of consciousness, not mechanisms for producing it.

The Occam's razor favors the simpler explanation though.

What explanation are you referring to though? Just saying consciousness is an emergent property is not an explanation. Rather it is an assertion.

I agree with much of what you say but not with this statement. That would be a silly argument since it's very easy to imagine algorithms of arbitrary complexity that are trivially not conscious. A better argument for computationalism states that (1) consciousness could be an emergent property of certain algorithms when they are running on a computational device, and (2) among all known explanations of consciousness, a computational theory seems to be the overall best theory, especially if compatibility with contemporary physics is a goal.

The article lays out one incorrect standard argument against (1) that basically just says that it's hard to imagine (1) and therefore (1) is not possible. The Chinese room and the Chinese brain arguments do the same, and they are equally flawed. Just because something is hard to imagine or comprehend doesn't imply that it isn't the case. In fact, if consciousness is an emergent property of certain algorithms when they run, then it is clear that their workings are hard to understand. That's reasonably clear because otherwise we would already have found them.

Regarding your worry that we might not be able to detect consciousness: I agree with that but there is, interestingly, a loophole. At least in theory it could be possible that if computationalism is true, then we can determine that an algorithm produces consciousness by mere analytic insight. Again, this is hard to imagine, but it is not impossible. It seems more likely that (2) is the only route to go, that for some reason we lack the capacity to determine consciousness reliably by mere analysis, but we don't know.

(2) is the most controversial in the philosophy of mind. On the one hand, it is clearly inference to the best explanation, and there are various methodological concerns with such arguments. One might claim that they have no justificatory value on their own. On the other hand, the alternatives to computationalism really are way more mystical. The brain could be a hypercomputer. But hypercomputers can also compute, so it's just an extension of computationalism and it is not even fully clear yet whether and which types of hypercomputers are physically possible. Then there is Penrose's theory of quantum consciousness, which basically just attempts to explain one mysterious phenomenon by another mysterious phenomenon. At least it was designed as a falsifiable theory and therefore is scientific. Finally, we have all kinds of non-computationalism that are mystical, explain nothing, and lead to strange homunculus problems. The worst offender is classical dualism. Dualists reject physicalism and often incorrectly assume that computationalism presumes physicalism. Ironically, however, computationalism would also be the best theory of how the mind works if dualism was true. The dualist just adds to this various stipulations that are incompatible with contemporary physics.

That's only true from a very narrow scientific perspective. Psychology allows the use of introspective data, so from that perspective subjective reports about consciousness (or related feelings and states of mind) can be valid data. Using a reasonable definition based on introspection we can even determine different degrees of consciousness and study what's going on in the brain while they appear to be active. Typical examples: falling asleep, dreaming, sleep paralysis, research on anaesthetics and mind-altering drugs, various forms of physical brain defects, the study of coma patients, etc. In a nutshell, I don't really buy the "consciousness cannot be measured" argument. What is correct is that we cannot show conclusively that another person or machine is conscious, just like we cannot disprove solipsism. But this is best treated as an overly skeptic philosophical argument, and at best this would support the theory that consciousness is an illusion and we are nothing but unconscious robots. That theory is not very plausible either, so we should be ready to grant consciousness to others based on introspective data.

I have no idea, I’m just saying you can conceive of physical phenomena being the subjective experience of existing within a computed environment. If, on the other hand, the computation happens within the physical substrate of the thing it’s computing… that seems weird to me.

The issue is how humans confuse "consciousness" with the ability to mimic what human output that modern people associate with consciousness. I'd argue that what we refer to as "consciousness" is the ability to form certain kind of mental abstractions, particularly those involving ourselves. Take away language from a person (imagine someone who grew up in the wild, or someone like Helen Keller who didn't have language…

I don’t find this to be a satisfying way to think about it.

The problem is that it’s quite possible that the abstractions you’re talking about are all part of the genetic ROM that exists so we can boot up our clones more quickly. If this is true then there is no reason that these abstractions couldn’t be learned, in which case you could take away the language, and perhaps the machine would continue to have thoughts; it would just be unable to communicate them. Of course, in this case you would probably conclude that it’s not conscious because it can’t communicate.

The underlying problem here is that we don’t know how consciousness emerges. We can’t say that LaMDA is not conscious unless we’ve proven that LaMDA’s construction is incompatible with consciousness, and we have not done that.
