The current chapter is coming to an end. It will get messy, and it will be expensive. The next chapter will be different (solo), in another environment. I've stopped caring about money (or running out, at least). Whatever will be, will be. Not OK, but I'm OK with not being OK…for now, anyway.

Open to chat? I identify with this.

It's both insane that we have so many school shootings, and insane that we've spent so much money fortifying schools and traumatizing teachers and kids (find some teachers and ask them how people react even to pre-announced active shooter drills—people break down shaking and crying, have actual fight-or-flight responses kick in, et c., when those fake gunshots start, and that's the adults ) in response. The former is…

I'm sorry, there are fake gun shots in active shooter drills? What the fucking fuck? That is insane. What possible benefit could there be to that bit of simulation that would outweigh the additional trauma that would cause? Not to mention all the survivors of school shootings who presumably have the dubious pleasure of being retraumatised on an annual basis. Fuck. You're right on "do something". But fuck. I never gue…

I worked in a public school about 10 years ago.

They wouldn't tell any of us that the drills were coming. Everyone had to take cover in the classrooms and barricade the doors as the "Intruder Alert" message blared over the loudspeakers. Then someone would come through the halls and bang on every door. It's beyond insane.

Tend to swing between extremes but mostly just frustrated. There's a new crisis every five minutes following by politicians handling it extremely poorly with zero integrity. Why do we put the most greedy and foolish people into power? For once, I just want to know things are getting better in the world. It's not doomscrolling that's done this to me. It's just being conscious of what's happening. There isn't much good…

I’m being depressed by the news as well. Everything seems to get worse every month. it’s been like that since 2016. It kind of feels like a nightmare. Like an America movie except the bad guys win.

I’d love to hear that it’s just the media going crazy, and me falling for doomscrolling. I was more or less immune to this, but then Ukraine invasion happened. I feel powerless.

Objectively speaking I am doing great on all accounts. The only blemish is that I am working at the worst job in my long professional life.

I am actively interviewing for new jobs, I get to the final stages and then I am not selected. Presently I am a finalist for a new job, they were supposed to make their decision yesterday but .

I continue to sent out resumes, it's a number game, so sooner or later it's going to happen, and it has to do with the quantity (and quality) of my job search activities.

Wish me luck; while not critical, luck always help.

do you want to talk about it? or is there anyone you trust who you can reach out to? is there anything we can do for you?

Is there a way to message another HN user, to be able to communicate without it being public but also without giving the world your email address?

(A day later, the Washington Post runs an article casting shade on direct messaging since it can be used to say bad things.)

I've been at the same company (more-or-less, due to acquisitions) for nearly 25 years, and I'm burning out, edging closer to pulling the eject lever. It's a bit daunting, since I haven't been to a job interview since the 90s. And I strongly suspect the reasons I want to leave won't necessarily be any better elsewhere.

It will necessarily be different — because it sounds like you'll demand that it be, if you make a jump!

So much variety in workplaces, especially now, and you being senior, you should have your pick.

What are you trying to avoid?

Not great tbh. Might just use this opportunity to rant a bit. Maybe it’ll be cathartic. For years I’ve felt increasingly physically unwell. Started as dizziness when walking outside. Nowadays I also feel utterly exhausted, and short of breath, often. Kinda like how you feel coming down with the flu, but like most of the time. It’s ruining my life, frankly. I’ve had many tests done to exclude cardiac or neurological i…

I'm on a similar boat with general malaise, breathing issues, and insomnia. Has been going on for about 2 years and has destroyed my quality of life and ability to do any kind of physical activity. Doctors have no idea and have essentially just told me to live with it. It seems like being caught in limbo - being just well enough to work and subsist but too ill to go out and really do things. I just keep hoping one da…

Have you examined your home (twice!) for environmental issues?

Mold is the one that keeps coming up in things I've read about long-term health mysteries.

Not great. A bit more than two years ago my wife went back home to Japan to give birth to our daughter. Then covid hit and her stay there was prolonged. At some point she decided she'd rather stay there permanently. I accepted that she wasn't going to change her mind, so I started doing everything I can to prepare for a variety of possible futures: - Learning web development to transition from my current career as a…

For what it's worth, I moved to the United States at some point halfway to adulthood, and I felt the way you describe for about eight years. It took me about three to grok the language, but where I landed was so culturally homogeneous and alien that every day I dreamed of moving back.

It took me moving to a different state (and a very diverse city) to be able to find places where I felt a little closer to belonging. I'm not sure where in Japan you are, but I wonder if certain places or even neighborhoods might be a little easier to integrate into from the start than others?

In any case, I think conversations about whether the relationship is right or not are a little beside the point. You have a child together! Continue doing what you feel is right (i.e., it seems – trying to make it so that your daughter has a father figure for at least a little while in her formative life). I really wish mine had done that. I wouldn't focus on whether you'll stay in Japan permanently or not – just one step at a time for now, and you can always move back in a few years. Maybe your wife will follow you back just as you followed her this time, maybe not, but at least you'll have made some cherished memories with your daughter.

I don't know where you live, but there are a lot of investor type buyers who buy with no on site visit or inspection. Or generally don't mind taking on the site improvement issues. You may also be able to get a deal in place where you sell and agree to rent for x months. Do you know that you need to make the improvements to sell? As in, have you actually tried to sell?

I haven't tried, but I always imagined that my house isn't very attractive to flippers or investors, because it's a condo. The HoA disallows its use as a rental in the covenant, and any serious improvements need to be done by a licensed contractor and permitted (my bathroom remodel took probably a year longer to get started because we had to submit plans with the city with an architect to do some retiling). Near ever…

If you're living in it, it's ready to move in.

Unsure what market you're in, you may be surprised at what state of things people are buying due to the high demand and "lack of supply".

This resonates with me SO MUCH. One time I aced a code test but didn't answer the questions about complexity in "big O" notation because I lack that formal training. My code 100% exposed my understanding of computational complexity but they wanted specific words regurgitated. Ran into that manager at a burn, bagged on him (we're friends!) a bit about it.

Could you clarify "big O" and "a burn"?

Big O notation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_O_notation

A burn: Have you heard of Burning Man? It's kinda like that, except not in Nevada.
