Earlier quoted context omitted.

Option 3, let the ad funded internet die and keep the remaining good parts.

The problem is that the most popular alternative, microtransactions, doesn't work. Turns out there is a big psychological barrier between free and literally any payment at all, even a few pennies. People are sensitive to the danger of being nickled and dimed to death. And that's before you get into the problem of how to set up a clearinghouse where you can handle microtransactions without being eaten alive by fees.

I think taxes are the biggest hurdle for microtransactions. You are legally required to report taxes in _every_ country where you have customers. This means that the customer will need to fill in address information for each website they want to use which is also a high barrier. And if you run an online business it won't take long before you have to report taxes in 200 countries. It's a job on its own to administrate that!

With advertisements you receive payments from a single party, and because it's a business-to-business transaction it's tax free.

What do people use to block garbage domains from their Google results? Google results, especially for developer stuff, is so awful -- cluttered with junk sites ripping off content from blogs and Stack Overflow, etc.

I've been trying to figure out some rules for uBlock Origin, but haven't gotten there, yet.

Edit: Multiple fantastic options in the replies, below. Thanks, people!

The most popular extension, and the 2nd most popular, just like the 6th, 7th, 9th and 10th most popular, are ad-blockers. I guess it's only marketers that love targeted ads...

I sometimes wonder if adtech devs also use adblockers.

I’m a web developer, but I use noscript, despite the sites I work on relying on JavaScript and the business not allowing us to make them work without scripting enabled.

Right but what are they really competing with for those top spots? Most other functionality comes built into the browser these days.

uBlock Origin, with CNAME uncloaking is the most powerful ad/tracker blocking tool. Browsing Internet without it is often time a scary experience. It does block our [Wide Angle Analytics]( https://wideangle.co/documentation/track-with-custom-domain ) tracker about which we are open about. And ... we are not against. Every user should have a right to self determination and control when browsing the Internet. Our track…

I'd upvote more than once if I could! If every tracking / ad provider would like that the internet would be a better place!

It is a well-known fact they do.

This is why adtech has gotten craftier about ads, and adblockers have had to respond accordingly.

Only marketers love ads in general. To the rest of us, it's just annoying noise, to be filtered.

Recently, the uBlock Origin icon in my toolbar has just disappeared and doesn't appear in the overflow menu. Anyone else see this?

Windows 10

Was on 97.0.2 and did not have that issue.

Just now updated to 98.0 and still do not have that issue.
