Updates improve wash efficiency, etc. Not just security updates. Maybe a new cleaning powder comes with a new algo. Maybe there's a better dosing for certain levels of water hardness. But the gist is that it updates the whole module. I'm fine with this, Miele are like Bosch in that they look after the hardware they sell for decades rather than considering it deprecated the day it leaves a shop floor.
The dishes all need to be totally clean, every time, or it's useless to me.
The pro move is to set up a password-protected hidden guest Wi-Fi with client isolation and use it for every IoT device that needs internet but no local access. Bonus points if you put it on an isolated VLAN but that's homelab 201.
This will work for this generation of devices. The impending next-generation devices that will come with their own embedded 3G/4G antennae are going to pose a whole new set of problems. The electricity and water efficiency are likely terrible compared to a modern machine.
I'd be interested in seeing a comparison on this. Washing dishes is a pretty mechanically limited process. I can't imagine that much improvement has been made.

My ~25 year old dishwasher has a delay-start. That solved the stray dish issue for us.
My dishwasher needs no software. The dishwasher I buy will never need software. I am a software engineer and I love technology, but I love simple technology and when something doesn't need software, I don't add software just for the sake of having software.
Why the heck does a dishwasher need firmware updates?
