Not everyone needs 15+ hours of battery life. I'd argue that most people don't. Laptops were extremely popular when the battery life was two hours. Now even older laptops get 5h+.

Low wattage is not only about battery life. It is mostly about requiring less power for the same work. However you look at it, it is good for everyone. Now that Apple has shown that this can be done, everyone else will do the same.

I just can't figure out what I'm missing on the "M1 is so fast" side of things. For years I worked* on an Ubuntu desktop machine I built myself. Early this year I switched to a brand new M1 mini and this this is slower and less reliable than the thing I built myself that runs Ubuntu. My $1000 Windows laptop from two years ago kills my M1 MacBook Pro. Benchmarks aren't everything and there's more to speed than just raw calculations.

Is it 5 pounds and 2 inches thick? The fact is is that my M1 Macbook Air that was $1400 would cost at least $2000 from HP, Dell or Lenovo to even approach similar performance, and still have a worse screen, worse battery life, AND would still be slower. I have not seen a laptop chip from AMD or Intel in fanless, thin laptop like the Macbook Air that even gets close to the M1.

12900K has 8 high performance cores (with 2 hardware threads each, look up hyperthreading), and 8 efficiency cores for a total sum of 24 hardware threads.

Previous Intel generations have only had so called high performance cores (except, maybe, for the Atom line of CPUs), even though not all of them have had hyperthreading enabled.

I'm in the situation where I really want to pre-order a 14", but I have no idea if going with the base model would be a mistake. Would upgrading to 32GB RAM make Xcode faster? Or would it be a waste of $400?

My opinion: the jump from 16GB to 32GB probably won't make a huge difference today, especially if your workload is already running alright in 16GB. I think it'll greatly extend the useful life of the laptop, though. For example, I wouldn't want to be using an 8GB laptop today.

This is exactly why I waited for the "M1X" over the M1 Mac. Over time, apps and websites tend to bloat up and consume more memory. Especially since you can't upgrade your Mac later, buying a higher amount of RAM upfront will no doubt extend the usable life of the machine.

if you define efficiency as compute per watt. I don't give a flying crap about watts. Efficiency is measured as amount of work done per hour. Because I get paid for the work, and then I pay the two dollars a week for the watts. I don't care if it's five dollars a week for the watts or two. I do care if it's two hours of waiting time versus five.

Compute per watt is compute per dollar. If you want more compute, spawn more cores. In this case, it will be cheaper with ARM.

lol no. the $20/month cost of electricity is a rounding error for my $6k laptop and the $50k of software licenses for it. It's even less of a rounding error for the datacenter, where a $500k ESX farm that has several million in software on it farm uses $5k of electric per per month including cooling.

Have you noticed almost no one uses ARM? There's a reason for that. Including software being licensed per core, so faster hotter cores and fewer of them win.

I have an amd laptop and wife has an M1. Mine has twice RAM, twice SSD, more ports, is 10% lighter and 20% cheaper.

And your AMD laptop can run many OSes, while your wife will forever be stuck on macOS on the Apple M1 laptop whose hardware is designed to be hard to repair and upgrade ...

I tried to work with the apple laptop, it's very good in many aspects, but I needed a program and it can't be installed without Apple ID. I think there are many programs like that for the Mac, so I passed.

It's fine to work sometime on battery. Except, after 5 hours, marginal utility decreases, and 8 hours it goes to zero. Why would I need more than one day?

because you're a "dev" who makes web pages for a company that can't afford an oracle license. and your office is a starbucks. but you want to call your little toy a pro, because to non-programmers, you make missle guidance systems. well not you. but the other few people on this thread.

sure, but it's also running at JEDEC either way, it's actually irrelevant to performance, it's just a matter of packaging (obviously for laptops, stacking the packages is more convenient than DIMMs or soldered modules).

A lot of people don't have a desktop so a very powerful laptop that just works (tm) well for software development and can be lugged around effortlessly is ideal. I haven't owned a desktop myself in years and many engineers I know have been letting their rigs collect dust as the laptop just does it all.

For the price, there isn't something comparable in all respects.
