The antivax movement existed long before COVID and Facebook was a huge contributor to its spread. There is nothing scary about someone researching that.

Iirc, he was asking a CDC official whether the application of a disinfectant to infected lungs had been investigated. A stupid idea on its face, but at no point did he recommend the consumption of bleach as a cure or a treatment for covid.

Rather than trying to tease out the explicit meaning or jokes or subtext, we could just consider the rise of bleach ingestion at the time. Responsible people with a platform speak responsibly.

Given he never mentions bleach, or even suggested disinfectant as anything other than a quizzical aside to an aide - if the rise in bleach poisonings were to be attributed to anyone, it would be media outlets propagating the claim that he wanted people to drink bleach.

However, the rise in bleach poisonings seems to have predated his statement, and pundit's subsequent interpretation

There are plenty of exceptional reasons to have a low opinion of the man, and call him irresponsible with the platform he had. No reason to make up more.

Honest question: who's fact checking the fact checkers in FB? No offense, but those fact checkers are not necessarily smart or knowledgeable in every subject. They don't necessarily know the difference between DNA and RNA, allele or gene, second international vs third international, and the list goes on. The fact checkers may be ideologues themselves. They fact checkers may not even make it through college courses. So, I really don't get why they think they know the truth of everything and can tell FB users what is misinformation and what is not.

If you believe "the vaccine turned people into the Hulk", thats a mental health problem. But when inconvenient claims, like "vaccines can cause blood clots in rare cases", often flagged as misinformation, you don't instil much confidence with the public. And so they go out and get information from other sources.

Has "vaccines can cause blood clots in rare cases" been flagged as misinformation? I don't think it has. I get the impression that the misinformation filter is 99% accurate.

Can't respond to the first, but it's pretty clear that those groups that think they are the single source of truth would probably include any self-proclaimed "fact checkers", which seems to now also include Facebook itself -- and would normally also include the CDC (excepting the ironic title of this thread, of course!)

Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that the fact checkers believe that there is an external source of truth (i.e. facts) which they are checking?

An irony here is that Facebook is now censoring the CDC, when it previously claimed that it was censoring using the guidelines of the CDC.

Another irony is that the White House said that it was flagging comments for Facebook fact-checkers just last week:

“We’ve increased disinformation research and tracking within the Surgeon General’s Office. We are flagging problematic posts for Facebook that spread disinformation.”

Apparently this now includes posts from another part of the executive branch.

People were spreading misinformation about the link. Just to be clear, there is no recall. The test is not defective. The test can be used through the end of the year. The CDC recommends using tests that can detect flu as well as COVID. The current PCR test from the CDC does not detect flu at all, or other coronaviruses. The test is very specific. See pages 40 on in the Instructions for Use[1] if you are interested.…

If more fact checkers wrote like you I'd take them more seriously.
