I hate to break this to you but drug abuse, social media addiction, sex, alcohol, and porn addiction all exist and happen within China, and I imagine all over east asia as well. As someone living in China I’ve either seen this directly (social media and alcohol addiction are particularly common) or know of it second hand. In fact I would argue it’s worse in China, not just because of it being illegal but because culturally people like that are judged more harshly and more easily rejected from society. At least in the west, there is sympathy for addicts and a general trend to understand their problems and help treat them.

In the US, the concept of personal freedom is rooted on two principles: 1. Rights restricted or outright lost are difficult, if not impossible to get back, without revolution. 2. Most prefer a reactive government more than a proactive government.

So yes, there is a natural fear about the highest level of government implementing such restrictions, it is generally considered a method of last resort. Local municipalities or simply the family as a social unit have a better understanding and capacity to handle such matters.

The people living there want this. People in the Soviet Union believed in a lot of ineffective things too. If opposing viewpoints were better accepted there would be no restrictions. People aren’t stupid, the system just ill informs them.

I disagree: people are very dumb. Not merely ignorant or misled, but actually stupid. No one nationality, ethnic group, or other arbitrary grouping is smarter than any other; they're all equally stupid.

You think a military dictatorship like China isn't going to (mis)use such images to help maintain control?

I'd recommend reading some 1984. China is a genocidal, military dictatorship. I wouldn't be surprised if they force a hot war out of the cold one currently brewing.

Nintendo is Japanese, and I don't think they heavily rely on such mechanics. They may have such aspects in their games for mobile phones, though.

Sadly their phone games imitate the worst things their competitors in both Japan and China are doing in terms of gambling, predatory pricing, etc. The revenue's certainly good.

Maybe if you jump from game to game and try to play the "latest and greatest" all the time. There are plenty of people who mostly play a few games or niche games.

Arguing that you can always just avoid Tencent in China is equivalent to standing under a tree to avoid the rain, then when it soaks through the leaves and makes you wet, saying “well I can always find another tree.”

Tencent is doing this verification because the law of the land in China says they have to. If other companies in China don’t employ the same measures, it’s only a matter of time before they will as well.

Problem is, you have no idea what people, not just kid would accidentally point their camera at. And you couple that with lay down position and a touch screen.

No need to mention capture imagery of a child (which the system would totally do, and kids will give it a try believe or not) without consent from their parent alone is problematic regardless it's accidental or not.

And above all, that system is useless to begin with. Think about following questions: 1) When do you verify? Before, during or after the game? 2) Do you have to verify at the spot at night? 3) How often do you re-verify?

BTW, there is an anti game addiction system already in place in China, which is based on photo ID (Resident ID card) verification. In my opinion, the system is doing well enough already even for today's kids.

If Tencent really care the addiction that much, maybe they should just shutdown the game server during the night.
