> In a swipe at Tesla, he said that by charging hourly fees, VW would make autonomous driving more accessible than “a car with a five-digit surcharge.”

This is completely disingenuous at best, and malicious at worst. This is a perfect example of the boots theory of socioeconomic unfairness [1]. This is just taking advantage of the poor-middle class' inability to pay a larger upfront cost, to extort them for more over a larger period of time.

The average person in the northeast spends 31 minutes commuting per day [2], for simplicity that's 0.5 hours,* 2 commutes a day, * 5 days a week, * 50 weeks a year (assuming 2 weeks vacation), is 250 hours commuting a week. At ~9 dollars including tax per hour, that means in just 4.4 years[3] it's already more expensive to rent this feature if the surcharge is initially 10k as VW claims. This is true even if the car is used ONLY for commuting, which is likely a non-major portion of use time.

This is 100% a way to extract more money from consumers, especially non financially stable consumers, while lying to all of our faces.

An hour can move you 60 miles on the highway, which is likely at least 2 gallons of gas. So gas would be $6-8. $8.50 seems like a great deal.

Uhm, it says "access the features". I presume you own the car, have insurance, pay for gas and then also pay for the software "driver".

When leasing the car, you own nothing, right?

If you don't have to also buy the car, this might be reasonable

I was going to say, $8.50/hour autonomous Uber sounds amazing. $50 to get from the bay area to Mt. Shasta. But if you have to own the car, fuck that. If you own it you should own access to all features that the hardware is capable of.

I also would not buy a smartphone with wheels that sends millions of data points per hour to a foreign server.

OK, but what all will it include?

Will it include my auto insurance, since if I'm not driving why am I paying for insurance? If there is an accident will it cover my deductible? If the car get stolen, will it drop the thieves at the police station and come back to me? and others..

If it's just driving me from point A to B, no thanks, I can do that myself.

What if it crashes into someone, wouldn't you be responsible then?

And we haven't even gotten onto the ethics of - in a bad situation - choosing whether to sacrifice the passenger or another road user. Would you buy a car that throws you over a cliff to avoid ploughing through 20 kids running stupidly onto the road? I mean, in theory the autonomous driving will be good enough to protect both. But a similar scenario will come up somewhere/sometime and what is the correct answer? What…

In practice, humans don't make these decisions and autonomous cars won't either. They'll default to brake and stay on the road, lacking other options, because it's the simplest option and doing aggressive dynamic things to try and prevent a bad outcome to outsiders is not really likely to have a better outcome.

Having finally had a chance to test-"drive" an advanced autopilot Tesla last weekend, I can confidently say at the current level of that tech I would pay less than nothing. At best (cruising down a well-marked highway) it was only slightly worse than useless, taking a different line in the lane than I considered optimal, leaving me feeling a background level of apprehension. From there it ranged through frustrating,…

Tesla's status on this is really controversial. Some people think that Tesla's sheer data advantage will put them way ahead soon and that it's imminent. On the other hand, Waymo is doing pretty well on most trips (admittedly within a small geofenced zone that has friendly weather -- you can watch oodles of video from jjricks on real trips here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61AfxOMu3wY )

I actually have watched a number of his videos, and while it is considerably better than the Tesla self driving, it's not something I'd currently pay to experience vs driving myself (or vs an Uber at a similar price point). The driving style is still too awkward and, to me, discomfiting.

You will own nothing and love it

I try to follow the url in that thread but it gives me a "Sorry, but we can’t find the page you were looking for", is it just me? Here's an archive link https://web.archive.org/web/20201113005029/https://www.wefor... It was an interesting ready but a bad way to start the day.

At 8.50/hr, that gives you about ~53,000 miles of autonomous range for the same price as Tesla's add-on price for "full self driving ($10k surcharge).

To me, an upfront $10,000 surcharge seems less scammy than what VW is offering, despite it likely being cheaper over the lifetime of the vehicle.

I despise the whole sharing economy. I prefer the good old days where i own everything i use.

Maybe that's just not the resource efficient way going forward. Maybe in the future people will laugh at the idea of buying 2 tons of steel to sit around doing nothing for 95% of it's lifetime.

Sure, but with this you get the worst of both worlds. You pay to own some metal sitting around most of the time and then pay to use it.
