The opportunity is worth a lot of future business. Do you think people get paid when they give a radio interview? They are using the radio as a platform for selling.

Many professionals--yes, including developers doing something on the side in open source projects--can have a lot of different motivations. Yes, in some cases, doing free stuff is at least loosely connected to what they're paid for. But, especially in the case, of people like business and technology consultants, they'll often speak at a conference for free depending upon their business model and other choices.

There are unpaid government/government-type internships. The UN is the most notable example. Most on Capitol Hill are also unpaid. Many local governments do it as well as they are cash strapped.

lol - those capital hill internships often result in K street positions. It’s why all those “unpaid” positions are HIGHLY contested.

Just curious - have you ever earned money directly for yourself or have you only ever gotten a paycheck from a company or other person?

This case is very different than an internship, Netflix producers appear to be soliciting a working professional photographer.

The PERFORMER pays for the half-time show! Obviously Lady Gaga is a terrible talent and a worse business woman.

Do they? My understanding was that the performer receives no money and lays out no money, with the Super Bowl funding the show and getting the star for free.

As in many things, this is an example of an equilibrium that probably doesn't precisely identify the relative value of each party's contribution, but which is very easy to agree on.

Unpaid internships, probation etc. historically were created because you'd have completely unskilled labor that wanted a job, and for the company it would take resources to train the person on the job. Which made sense a century ago for the industries of the time.

However, in the modern age, companies require a certain amount of skill for even the most entry level job and the colleges kind of take over some of the responsibilities of training the unskilled labor. At this point, unpaid internships no longer are about companies sinking cost into people without reaping benefits.

The promotion effect seems like a fair trade IMO. I was a software freelancer at one point. I would've traded 5 days of work for getting my business (and face) in front of 30 million people.

That's essentially what professional develoeprs who maintain popular open source projects are doing.

Netflix is rolling in billions of dollars. They get favorable tax treatment in the US with the expectation that those savings will "trickle down" and effect job creation. That doesn't work if the people calling the shots keep all the money for themselves.

If you expect to get immediate value you are doing it wrong. The point is to build relationships with a good school and get a pipeline of applicants that will eventually become great engineers.
