The US continues to support unpaid work in a pretty major way. I think unpaid internships being socially acceptable is one of the roots of this insidious habit. They've been illegal up here in Canada for a while and it hasn't really caused any economic disasters. It'd be a good change to advocate for down there as well. And, honestly, internships aren't free for companies unless there is literally nothing of value be…
unpaid intern are absolutely good. many i have known are starting this way, before they have plenty skills for to gain full pay internship. ban are stupid, stop your try to interfere with economy via government.

#232I actually feel bad for Netflix here. They have nothing at all to do with this (as the article rightly points out) but the photographer is blaming them anyway, and I'm sure all of their friends are too.

#233I think the scale of the 'Exposure' does matter here (please don't just downvote, hear me out). Exposure = Advertisement, right? Wouldn't you pay for advertisement? Now, if you invest very little for advertisement, you might get very little in return. Say, your investment is doing a free 'exposure' gig for a return of 20-30 potential customers. This might not be equitable to your time/equipment/team/etc. Now, in the…
I'm willing to bet money precisely nobody is going to seek out those photographers because they found them in the fineprint of some probably cringeworthy netflix show. The best they can hope for is having additional munition to convince a potential but hesitant customer. Also, some people need money this month, not maybe-money 2 years down the line.
> Some people need money this month, not maybe--money 2 years down the line.
I agree, but I stand by the statement that this is a business decision.
I have to believe this is a rare opportunity too, and doesn't compare to the common 'exposure opportunity' from various producers/promoters out there. I did music for a while, and have seen my good share of this, and was always surprised how many people fall into it. Even when it clearly meant it was a very bad business decision--and most of the time, not even fun.

If Netflix won't pay you, who the fuck will? Whats the value of 'promotion' at that point?

>I think unpaid internships being socially acceptable is one of the roots of this insidious habit. When I worked with interns they were all paid... but every one was more time and expense to work with than any value they provided. In weeks they accomplished what I could do in an afternoon, and we spent WAY more than an afternoon of work with them. Amazingly many seemed to have a very high opinion of their productivit…
every one was more time and expense to work with than any value they provided. I've only had interns at one job, and I had a similar complaint. My boss told me that's exactly what's supposed to happen. He explained that they're not free labor. I'm supposed to be training the next generation of $my_profession, and if they're not getting in the way, I'm not letting them do enough to learn. I guess in some ways he was r…

No HR person would allow unpaid intern positions in 2021. It's very clearly illegal in the United States. When I mentor college students, the only times we hear about unpaid internships are: 1) Unfunded wannabe startups or small family businesses who don't understand what they need, but they assume they can convince some naive kid to do it for free. No one with actual skills or prospects takes these jobs. Job boards…
Has this changed recently? When I was in school, seemed like most internship opportunities I found were unpaid. There was some deal where it would count as college credit. Now don't try to tell me college credit counts as being paid
> Unpaid internships are legal if the intern is the "primary beneficiary" of the arrangement. This is determined by the seven-point Primary Beneficiary Test.

The US has a minimum wage. That begs the question: is hiring unpaid photographers for a Netflix show even legal in the US?

#240If you're trying to grow your photography business you obviously can't do it for free forever, but you probably do some high profile jobs for cheap or even free if you think the longer term pay-off is there.
I actually think Netflix will get a much better photographer paying nothing then they would if they paid low or average rates. The value alignment is much closer with the former.
