The problem with this is that it creates lots of equity issues. How exactly are poor people supposed to get into government if the entry level positions (internships) are unpaid?

What government would ever have unpaid positions? Nice red herring. Now if you want to discuss the preposterousness of the lower end of some government pay scales - game on!

There are unpaid government/government-type internships. The UN is the most notable example. Most on Capitol Hill are also unpaid. Many local governments do it as well as they are cash strapped.

This will be an unpopular opinion, but I am feeling chatty today. As long as safety + working conditions are not cruel and unusual, and someone is willing to work for $0, why are you trying to stop (or hide) that fact? Someone willing to work for less (or for free) is offering a bargain to incentivize giving him/her the business or the benefit of experience instead of more $. You restricting them from doing that does…

I think the whole idea of this being work for $0 is incorrect. The "pay" comes in the exposure and authority the photographer will build after doing this.

If you're going to hire a wedding photographer, all things being equal, if one says they did the photos for a show that you are familiar with, or appeared in magazines you're familiar with - that is worth a great deal in marketing value.

A smart photographer can build enough authority after doing this whereas they will never have to market themselves afterwards.

It seems that I'm in the minority opinion but I think exposure on a prime Netflix series tuned in by "30 million households" is quite an impressive offer and the compensation (or lack there of) is not important. Declining such an offer, unless you are a very successful professional, seems like the wrong thing to do and is perhaps an example of one's ego getting in the way of one's success.

Just make sure they spell your name right, as the saying goes.

So who are the nobodies who had their breakout because of the Super Bowl?

When dozens of celebrities offer to work for free, they won't pick a nobody. So what are you trying to prove? Do you honestly think it wouldn't skyrocket a new performer's career?

I think it sounds like an example that doesn't prove what you aim to convince me of.

Because you're a hobbyist and there's probably no chance in hell they'd contact you. This is this persons job and they look to be a professional. But imagine if Google or Microsoft or decided to ask you to do a software project for them for no money but you'd get exposure, would you do it? If so, I have a shit ton of work that I'll give you while collecting my salary and give you "exposure"...

Big organizations do that all the time. They call them hackathons.

They also have OSS projects like ES that accept free labor

If you're accepting an offer to work for free for a major company, why do you think you'd have enough leverage to negotiate those other things?

As with any contract, you don't know unless you ask.

Indeed. Funny how if you never ask the answer is magically always “no”.

:)

The US continues to support unpaid work in a pretty major way. I think unpaid internships being socially acceptable is one of the roots of this insidious habit. They've been illegal up here in Canada for a while and it hasn't really caused any economic disasters. It'd be a good change to advocate for down there as well. And, honestly, internships aren't free for companies unless there is literally nothing of value be…

When I worked with interns they were all paid... but every one was more time and expense to work with than any value they provided. I've only had interns at one job, and I had a similar complaint.

My boss told me that's exactly what's supposed to happen. He explained that they're not free labor. I'm supposed to be training the next generation of $my_profession, and if they're not getting in the way, I'm not letting them do enough to learn.

I guess in some ways he was right. Many of the most valuable lessons I've learned at work have come through mistakes I've made. And probably a bunch when I was an intern all those years ago.

I don't know anyone during my time as a student that took an unpaid internship. How common is this? All the internships and jobs my classmates and friends were getting involved an exchange of money for goods/services. Who is taking an unpaid internship and why? edit: I'm not sure why I'm being downvoted for not having been exposed to this. If you're willing to take an unpaid internship it's your own fault.

I just did a quick search at internships.com. over 1000 unpaid internships in the US just for keyword "marketing": https://www.internships.com/app/search?keywords=marketing&po...

The promotional aspects could be worth much more than whatever money they'd earn.

The better question is why a company with as much cash as Netflix can't afford to pay their photographers.

And not even some new project done on shoe-string budget. But already known and popular one. Kinda makes you wonder of other aspects of their material. They must have some people to do some photo-shoots and some post-production. So why not use those? Or how are they treated?
