Microsoft already have a Surface product with an ARM chip that didn't get updated in this round AFAIK. It already has solid ARM performance, but it's not as good as M1. You as the programmer get to take advantage of the "extra" very specific instructions, so overall you write less instructions. #575Intel sells CPUs, so it creates the ranges of CPUs to make money. They advertise clock speed and put the higher ones on a pedestal, that is how they can charge more money. The OEMs just used that playbook and developed their own marketing stories on top of Intel's marketing. Either no one tried to differentiate or they just didn't have the power to fight it.
Apple has a lot going for it in that scenario. They never had proliferation of models and always kept the number of options to a minimum. They also don't deal with volume, so they didn't have to do 20 variations of mac mini or the iMac. They kind of did their own thing even with the intel macs. Now with their own processor they were in a position to double down and make the whole product line even more efficient.
Like the article said, they couldn't have done if the M1 is not clearly better than the competition.

Hm, I'm surprised by that statement. The Ryzen 5000 mobile CPUs were a lot faster than the Intel competition and I am pretty sure Apple does not have them in any laptop. And the very fast SSD is a new addition, isn't it? Did I miss something?
You implied that they only saw a difference because Apple wasn't using "modern processors". You can't exclude everything but Zen 3 from any sensible definition of "modern processor".
Heck, he might have used an old dual core with an HDD from all we know. Of course the new M1 models would make a big difference then. So would all other modern laptops.
But in that context of x86 and ARM Zen3 is absolutely the only sound comparison.
