#422Here we go again. Comparing a 10w mobile RISC CPU to a 100w x86 CPU and somehow deducing that having a mobile CPU run desktop applications is a good idea. I wish all the Apple fanboys would just hurry up and buy one so they would realize they are comparing apples to oranges and sit back down. Nobody is buying an M1 to replace their gaming computer. And to insinuate that such a thing is possible or practical is dising…
That being said, personally I believe the gaming PC market is largely a niche market for the entire PC market.
At its core I don't see any reason the M1 chip can't play games (in fact we are seeing some good numbers come out of games that have a proper migration), it is purely a software issue.
It may not be able to compete with the top of the line custom built desktops, but the reality other gaming laptops that are far more expensive can't either.

AAA video games do that for you :P Well, it isn't the programming part that uses the ram(although yes, building our codebase takes about 40 minutes and uses gigabytes of ram without using distributed build), but just starting up local server + client + editor easily uses 80-100GB of ram since ALL of the assets are loaded in.
When VS decides to disk bomb you or uses literally 120GB of ram because its auto scaling trips up.

#424Make it as fabulous as much as you want, $1700 for an 8 core, 8 gigs of ram machine is just one plain fabulous joke. This in the time when 16 gigs ram is the baseline if you plan to do anything more than facebook and instagram.
Ah, and I also do stuff in Java/Eclipse/Nebeans, D and Rust equally fine.

They combine standard parts into a number of configurations that aren't as different from each other as a consumer might imagine, then slot those engines into a whole host of different car models.
From a production stand-point, this makes sense to me. I imagine that it makes high quality at a lower price much easier to accomplish for Apple.

It's getting a lot of prominence and its use across lots of computers means that there can be a consistent message that "M1 is great - get a new Mac and get an M1". Have you used a recent Macbook? The Macbook Pro keyboard is unique in that is is the only time in my life I have ever experienced a keyboard breaking. I think people are a little too nostalgic when talking about Apple build quality. There's a 2011 MBP here that still works well. But recent releases... no better than the competition really.

Depending on the requirements of your job—-just a single VS instance with chrome, postman and slack open takes around 5GB. Teams adds another GB or so. The rest probably another 2GB (SSMS and the like). On my particular team we also run a dockerfile that includes elastic search, sql server, rabbitmq and consul—-I had to upgrade my work laptop from 16GB to 24GB to make it livable.

Yeah the marketing effort is immense, and it's really surprising to me how many eagerly lap up the angle Apple is pushing without much reflection, even on HN. Like the good old Apple hype days. Now to be fair, the M1 is an impressive iteration on the A* chip line. But the Ryzen 5000 mobile chips really don't look bad at all in comparison, and a 5nm version of those would level the field.
