I just went from a 32GB RAM Macbook Pro to an 8GB RAM M1 Macbook Air...the difference is insane, I don't know what the hell the MB Pro is doing with its RAM, but it just felt like RAM was never enough on Intel Macbooks. Here on the M1, I don't feel my system crawling to a halt like I did on the MB Pro, and I'm doing the same workloads.
Exactly. It's not an apples-to-apples comparison. 8GB of M1 RAM is very different than 32GB of standard DIMM-like RAM. Sort of like when people compare nm of processes on the chips. You can't just say "oh, their number is smaller, it must be better." To be sure a device with 16GB of M1 RAM should be more competent than 8GB of M1 RAM, but now that's apples to apples.
Go on... What’s the nature of this great difference?

Yep, if you're running big IDEs (e.g. Rider/IntelliJ, Visual Studio), containers and VMs, 32GB is really a must. There always seem to be people in these threads claiming that 16GB or even 8GB is enough - I just don't understand how that could possibly be for most of the HN demographic.

On my particular team we also run a dockerfile that includes elastic search, sql server, rabbitmq and consul—-I had to upgrade my work laptop from 16GB to 24GB to make it livable.

Have you used a recent Macbook? The Macbook Pro keyboard is unique in that is is the only time in my life I have ever experienced a keyboard breaking. I think people are a little too nostalgic when talking about Apple build quality. There's a 2011 MBP here that still works well. But recent releases... no better than the competition really.
Which competitor has a touchpad that’s equal to or better than apple?
(Honestly I never even noticed that the apple touchpad was better than any other touchpad, but I understand that touchpad users will notice things I didn't.)

RAM use should always be 100% for reasonable definitions of "use". There's always more disk pages to be cached unless the machine has just booted. If they're not all being used, it means something temporarily flushed all the pages which is actually a bad thing.

Yeah the marketing effort is immense, and it's really surprising to me how many eagerly lap up the angle Apple is pushing without much reflection, even on HN. Like the good old Apple hype days. Now to be fair, the M1 is an impressive iteration on the A* chip line. But the Ryzen 5000 mobile chips really don't look bad at all in comparison, and a 5nm version of those would level the field.
I've been trying to get to the bottom of this here: https://github.com/solvespace/solvespace/issues/972 With my 2400G the benchmark takes 5.5 seconds. With someones M1 it takes 1.3 seconds. The 5800H gets 2.5x on cpu benchmark's rating vs the 2400G. This is composed of a 50% single core and 300% multi-core improvement.

Basically many modern Android phones today work perfectly well paired wirelessly with modern TV screen. Enable desktop mode, pair with a mouse and keyboard, and you have a kind of working environment: video chat, programming, text editing, office apps - all exists. That's actually how to watch youtube without ads, because non-Android TV has no freetube/newPipe apps.
Sadly I can't use a terminal or VSCode on Android so I can't use it as a development environment.

Are you aware that the latest generation has a new keyboard? It's not the fiasco that the previous super-slim one was.
Once bitten, twice shy. I considered that keyboard to be designed to fail. I'm not interested in gambling that another component won't fail the same way. It's easier to use products that have not demonstrated such designed failures. The good news however is that due to this garbage tier engineering I've discovered that desktop Linux is more stable for me than post-Catalina OSX - I'd have probably never found this out…
It's pretty clear what happened, and it's unfortunate but banal: someone went too far with making the key mechanism as thin as possible, and all plastic to make it easier to manufacture. Ends up the plastic wasn't strong enough for the little pins in the mechanism.
That's it. Just an ordinary design mistake. Embarrassing but no conspiracy.
FWIW they've resolved it. The keyboard on this M1 MBA is perfectly fine.

So my sister does professional photography, and went from a 16GB MacBook Pro(2016) to an 8GB Air, and reports no decrease of productivity - quite the opposite, in her experience all Adobe programs run much faster, and the machine is quieter and lighter to boot. So yeah, I'm not sure - maybe the ram amount isn't as a big deal as people make it out to be. On the other hand I'm a C++ programer and my workstation has 128…
Web Developer here. Wouldn't accept anything less than 32GB for a work machine.
