If a society can't cope with people converting to Nazism because they read something on Facebook, I don't believe it's worthy of continuing.

I've often thought about this same point. Isn't interesting that last week, an article summarizing the soft sciences' best attempt at determining whether allowing children to play violent video games makes them actually violent later in life was so well received? No one on Hacker News was surprised that shooting people in video games does not correlate to shooting people in real life. But if someone is permitted to w…

Few videos games are explicitly meant to instill hatred, and especially not through actual people. DOOM might suggest me to RIP AND TEAR, but there is a quite obvious disconnect from reality. The closest game that I can think of in this case is Hatred. But even then, it is so ridiculously over the top (both in terms of writing and the angle at which the game is played) that you're disconnected from it.

Compare that to Parler, where you usually join because "hey, those people are conservatives, like me". Neonazis have gotten pretty damn good at slowly steering people to what they want. Hiding your power level and all. Suddenly, in a place where you feel safe, some people start telling you that, say, it's all because of antifas. You might not believe it at first. But through repeated exposure, in a place where you feel safe, slowly but surely it seeps in. There are studies on how much more easily the brain is affected when you feel in a safe place.

Going to Parler for most people isn't to see what the white supremacists are about these days. Just hop on /Pol/ for that, or Stormfront for actual Nazis and you'll see it.

Absolutely. The only reason Parler is getting banned and Facebook isn't is because Facebook is too big to fail. Facebook and Twitter have the same amount of questionable content, just better PR and bigger clout.

I'd argue Facebook is doing something to remove problematic content ("Good Samaritan" section of the Section 230). Definitely not enough and there are myriads of ways that they can improve, but that's clearly different to Parler that does next to nothing.

Facebook is also making gobs of cash. When Facebook was new its moderation was just as weak as Parler.

Someone brought an interesting perspective in another thread and I can't shake it off. The other side keeps deplatforming them. Their legal cases are rejected. The mainstream media refuses to take them seriously. We're not even listening to them, because it's science and they're *ists if they disagree. We're not debating anymore. We just assume we're right. We are slowly squeezing a significant segment of the populat…

More like, they voted in 2016 and won and "the other side" raised concerns about manipulation of voters and attempted to go through pr…

> Party R comes along. Party R says, we really care about guns. We want to make sure everybody can buy a gun, and here's why guns are great. Guy B likes this because he thinks he might need a gun in case he runs into a Jewish person.

Way to reduce the right and need to own arms to be a crazy person's fantasy. It was recognized by the founders the are many legitimate reasons to keep and bear one.

> but he made his decision. Taxes were so important to him that he turned a blind eye to moral issues and decided to double-down when those issues escalated and "be loyal"

Very few issue are absent moral weight and taxes are not one of them.

They’ve been shifting the Overton window for years. Are against open borders? Then you’re a racist. Are against abortion? Then you’re a misogynist. Are for a pro worker visa policy and tariffs on imports? Then you’re a nationalist (which isn’t even a bad word but they make it sound like one) Are for the right to bear arms? Then you’re an uneducated hillbilly. Are for churches and other religious institutions to decid…

Your first example: > Are against open borders? Then you’re a racist. It's immediately obvious you are arguing in bad faith. Literally no elected official says this. Edit: instead of downvoting, please find a counterexample and I'll gladly eat my words.

I agree somewhat with OP. As an example, this happened in Canada: https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/ndp-jagmeet-singh-rota-raci...

Not the same thing, but this level of discourse is laughable.

Are you saying that Qanon might be worth hearing out and given a fair shake on the national state?

People don’t seem to understand, censorship is a double edged sword. You never know who will be in charge years from now and will abuse those very same good intentioned laws & we end up a police state.

People don't seem to understand what censorship is. Nobody is threatening throwing them in jail for saying anything, platforms are just saying "your speech is not welcome in my platform". They can still say whatever they want it in the streets. If they want a platform for it they can build it themselves....

Good. So you have no problem with me refusing to bake a cake for a gay couple because I have a moral objection? They can make their own cake.

Apple doesn’t censor Safari.

They instead cripple it by restricting important functionality to native apps, e.g. WebGL and push notifications, and by preventing users from modifying the system to remove these artificial limitations.

Why would WebGL be important for parler?

> If they want a platform for it they can build it themselves... Right, right. That’s working out well for Parlor.

They found their own pool to go pee in, and now they’re surprised that nobody wants to swim with them. It’s not everyone else’s fault that nobody else wants to be around these people. If you go to the pub and start picking fights you’ll be avoided and thrown out pretty quickly. This is the same: they went off and created their own app, their behaviour got worse, and now nobody else wants to deal with them. What is un…

Comparing Google and Apple to the local pub is disingenuous. Google alone could buy all the pubs in the UK with its one-year revenue (or one-year profit, if my calculations are correct)

Which part of what he said do you feel is incorrect? Facebook and Twitter indeed are not being held to the same standard. They have a 0% chance of being removed from any app store no matter what. Hell, the whole time Twitter allowed Trump to tweet and gave him a platform, they were threatened with app store delisting precisely 0 times.

Why do you feel that they should be held to the same standard? Violent content is a tiny of percentage of twitter, but a huge part of parler. Twitter also does moderate their platform, Parler refuses to. One of these obviously has a bigger problem with violent content than the other.

> Violent content is a tiny of percentage of twitter, but a huge part of parler.

You're going to have to show me some actual percentages for each platform and how you define "violent content" before I agrees with your premise.

This is horrible. I have no interest in parlor, but to require all users on iOS to only be able to communicate in public forums that are moderated is a horrible outcome.

They can still use the web interface, right? It is only their app that is violating ToS. I think it would be different in Apple was blocking their DNS.

Apple should probably remove Safari since there's too much unmoderated content on the open web.
