I'm honestly curious - where is the line drawn between a service being used to do "questionable" things and it being removed? We can all agree, for example, that the internet at large enables many bad things, but I doubt any of us would ban the internet (though in other countries this happens). What about reddit? A specific subreddit? A specific post? A specific user? A specific post by a specific user at a specific…

I can't believe this amazing comment was removed, because it's true. Where is the line? No one knows. "I think a seriously dangerous and underreported factor in these issues is the widespread use of the English language. I think it's time to hold accountable the Oxford English Dictionary company ("Big Word") and their agents, English teachers, for their role in enabling this ghastly event."

The comment was in no way "removed". Please don't feed this sort of perception. People are all too ready to leap to it as it is.

If you're not seeing it in the thread it's probably because the thread has been paginated for performance reasons. In that case you have to click More at the bottom to get to the rest.

Some of the screenshots seem objectionable, e.g. the one that wanted to burn down Pelosi's house while she was still inside, others seem like opinions, e.g. the one saying the protester shot by police was murdered, but none seem particularly bad, where "particularly bad" means "worse than content I'd find on Twitter". Seems inconsistent to me to ban Parler and not Twitter. Also seems undesirable for a phone manufactu…

Twitter moderates. Parler is being required to do the same.

Twitter only moderates if you have a certain political affiliation. Blue checkmarks made threats and organized violence directly on the platform all summer and Twitter didn’t bat an eye.

Someone brought an interesting perspective in another thread and I can't shake it off. The other side keeps deplatforming them. Their legal cases are rejected. The mainstream media refuses to take them seriously. We're not even listening to them, because it's science and they're *ists if they disagree. We're not debating anymore. We just assume we're right. We are slowly squeezing a significant segment of the populat…

> We are slowly squeezing a significant segment of the population out of public debate

They didn't exist in the public debate to begin with. Social media opened that up. We're realizing just how negatively impactful a village idiot with a megaphone the size of a city block can be.

What is “the other route”? They are being deplatformed because their speech is violent and damaging—in many cases it’s literal incitement to violence. Their legal cases are being rejected because they have no legal merit. The mainstream media refuse to take them seriously because they have again and again shown themselves to be bad faith actors, peddlers of unsubstantiated conspiracy, outright liars, and so on. I don…

> They are being deplatformed because their speech is violent and damaging—in many cases it’s literal incitement to violence. "in defense of looting" And while I'm at it - why isn't China being deplatformed? They literally just posted on their embassy twitter account saying they fixed minority women who were "baby-making machines." One can only guess they mean sterilization. It's obvious who's allowed to be inhumane…

I can read quite clearly between the lines of your comment, but I’m still having trouble finding where in my comment I said that users calling for violence on social media should be exempt from sanctions if they’re left-leaning.

> Their legal cases are rejected. The mainstream media refuses to take them seriously. Well these last two seem pretty par for the course for illegitimate claims been promoted as legitimate. At a certain point the line of absurdity has been crossed at it is not the duty of society to constantly debunk illegitimate claims. > The other side keeps deplatforming them In this particular case, Parler has been host to a num…

Yes, that is what reddit, twitter and Hacker News reinforce constantly. It's either because it's true, or because the other side has been repeatedly discouraged from adding their two cents in those communities. I've been seeing the world through this lens for so long that I can't tell. I find it somewhat implausible that half the population is dumb, racist and all those other labels. It seems much more likely that I…

> I find it somewhat implausible that half the population is dumb, racist and all those other labels.

It's (thankfully) not half the population. The vast majority of trump voters would be just as disgusted with the nastier parts of parler as you and I are, just like most Biden voters are honestly pretty disgusted with some of what happened under the cover of the BLM protests.

We already know from history what happens when large groups are disenfranchised from the public sphere. Violence. Lots of it. And once it starts, it's not easily stopped. Some welcome this because they think it can be managed for their own purposes. But once civil order breaks down, things simply accelerate with no possibility of talk being able to stop it anymore. It takes on a life of its own. Those who dream of th…

Ironically this mildly marginalized group seems to be very unforgiving of other marginalized groups. When they have to put their most extreme words on alternative websites they blame that preemptively for extremist actions.

When other groups have been marginalized systemically by public infrastructure, violence and a lopsided legal system, they advocate personal responsibility as a solution for systemic problems.

Thank fucking god. These tech companies were complicit in an incompetent but serious insurrection attempt. Better late than never, but they must have known things were going to get bad. The right and the associated white supremists have far too much freedom to spread disinformation, racism and hatred. I'm sure we'll see free speech absolutists in arms about this, but today is a good day for democracy.

> I'm sure we'll see free speech absolutists in arms about this, but today is a good day for democracy. Yeah, I think I'm done with this industry. When did everyone become a fascist all of a sudden? Edit: Fascism literally means big corporations and governments imposing a moral structure on society. What Apple is doing is fascist. It's also stupidly anticompetitive by not booting Facebook and Twitter off for the same…

" Fascism (/ˈfæʃɪzəm/) is a form of far-right, authoritarian ultranationalism characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition and strong regimentation of society"

Strong, independent corporations are essentially incompatible with fascism. You can't really have distributed authoritarianism. Corporations imposing a moral structure on the people they choose to do business with is the freedom of association protected by the first amendment.

This isn't, to be clear, me advocating for a corporatocracy. But fascism it ain't.

They are spewing a constant stream of hatred and disinformation. Nothing of value was lost here.

I couldn't tell, since what they have to say never reaches my feed. However I've been reading comments like yours across every platform for over a decade. At some point I'm not sure if they're really all that, or if I was just conditioned to believe that, and to leave them out of the conversation.

Check out thedonald.win and voat if you want to see what you're missing. People saying things like this are sugar coating it.

No, it's not surprising that they explode in unpredictable ways. That's why you need the tanks and the guns for when they do, not just let them run roughshod over the basic concept of fact-based reality.

Suddenly half the population is realizing the cons of centralized platforms. Curious if this moment sparks renewed interest in decentralized tech of yesteryear ie the good ol world wide web.

I just mentioned this but you can't even get people to use firefox. It's an uphill battle.

And yup, I noticed I'm not even on firefox right now.
