Jullie ook allemaal een gelukkig nieuwjaar! Never thought I'd live in a year that will be in the history books for a long time to come. So many lessons learned (most of them hard ones), spending three weeks in bed and many months in recovery was no fun at all. But much better than the alternative. Now, something tells me that 2021 can't possibly be worse than 2020 was but I've learned to allow for a little bit of sup…

Voor jou ook een gelukkig nieuwjaar, Jacques.

Godt nyttår! Let's hope we get to chalk 2020 down as "annus horribilis" in a few years time. Scandi language decoder: Gott nytt år - Swedish Godt nytår - Danish Godt nyttår - Norwegian

Interesting how Danish and Norwegian write nytår / nyttår, while Swedish is two words. I guess in Swedish you could write "Gott nyår!" but that would then be a wish for the actual New Years holiday and not for the entire year. Is the Norweigan and Danish about the entire year?

No, it's only a "happy new years eve" type. If written separately, it'd represent the whole year :)

Didn’t expect to see Cymraeg here on HN!

Cymro and proud :-) there's a few of us on here. Shameless plug for toot.wales - I run a bilingual Mastodon instance if you're interested. Iechyd da!

Thanks, been looking for an instance to join Mastodon and as one interested in Welsh, I think this just light be the perfect place to begin :)

Happy new year! I learned so much from reading this site. I got my first job interview from whoishiring thread, even though I didn't get the job. I got my first freelance project from here as well. Thank you, HN!

I also credit HN for my first job when I was switching from being a high school teacher to a full-time engineer.

Saw the job posting on a whoishiring thread and even though university was a long time ago for me I was able to speak intelligently about newer technologies thanks to reading HN over the years.

I lost all respect for the EFF after they supported the USA FREEDOM Act reauthorization of PATRIOT surveillance.

Link?

Weird that my comment was downvoted, I assumed this was public knowledge.

EFF supported this initiative. It wasn’t “reform” at all; courts had already ruled mass telecom surveillance illegal under “general warrant” provisions of the constitution. The programs were being shut down. The FREEDOM act “fixed” this and reauthorized the program by requiring FISA warrants to target specific “persons”—but here’s the catch: “person” was defined as per the FISA Act, where “Verizon” and “AT&T” are “persons”. So this wasn’t reform, the net effect was the same, but now the government just needed a warrant for each telecom company rather than having authorization to just spy on all of them at once. Read the bill... I absolutely couldn’t believe anyone was calling this “reform”.

As for EFF’s support of this horrible bill, link is here: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/05/usa-freedom-act-passes...

Happy new year everyone! Having a source of news that focuses on science and technology rather than politics has been a great way to keep from “doom scrolling”. I’ve learned quite a lot from the community throughout the year and I’m grateful to be a part of it!
