It's about five to midnight (GMT) Me and the wiff have just done a short wander through the park and around town. The thermometer has dived south quite a lot for these parts and we like to make sure no-one has been left behind. It looks like the Police and the various charities etc have got everyone safe off the streets here. Those that want to be discovered. We know of several who are quite stubborn about things and…

Good on you for checking in on the needy tonight, especially in the cold. One of the lessons I learned this year is that "the system" is nowhere near as good at helping people as an individual willing to give real help. (And also that "the system" in the US is mostly lip service. If you get evicted, and don't have family or friends to stay with, you will be on the street. Homeless shelters are either closed or packed. This is a very tough time for those who are already on the edges.)

Happy New Year! If you're in the United States, don't forget that today is the last day to make your tax deductible donations to charity for 2020! Here are some of my favorite tech related charities that I donate to: https://supporters.eff.org/donate/year-end-challenge--LDEF https://www.python.org/psf/donations/ https://www.freebsdfoundation.org/donate/

Szczęśliwego nowego roku!

A round of applause for 'dang for keeping this place in order. And another for all of you here, contributing things that gratify intellectual curiosity and maintaining a level of discourse that's atypically high for Internet communities.

For me, HN was an important part of keeping sane in this disaster of a year. Let's hope the next one will be boring.
