But Apple have outsourced all their manufacturing. That, as we've seen in Tesla's struggles, is a huge component of making a successful product. Agree with the vertical integration aspect + nearly unlimited capital.
Yeah, that is what modern supply chain management is.... being able to manage a ton of different outsourced suppliers

Man I don’t drive with a passenger enough to care about ui animations on my car. I just want to set the fan speed and move on... preferably without looking.
When I rented a Tesla I recall being able to set all these controls with my voice.
If the windows start to fog during one of those situations, taking your attention off the road to look and swipe is very dangerous.
Edit to add: Is the voice processing being handled on board? If not, then if your signal fails....

Having recently sold my Tesla Model 3 I can say there is a lot to be desired with that car. The biggest lesson from Tesla is that cars are not cellphones. Having one display off to the side, without buttons, that does everything is an awful experience in a car. I hope that Apple learns that lesson. I think if they had gone first they might have made that mistake too, but now that it's been tried they can find interes…
> Having one display off to the side, without buttons, that does everything is an awful experience in a car I have to strongly disagree with this. The touchscreen is great for the vast majority of things it replaces. The only physical controls I ever miss are for temperature (which is a very minor complaint) and windshield wipers (though I would also accept auto wipers that actually work). I do think the UI smoothnes…

Even big car companies like Mercedes outsource the manufacture of some models for third parties. For example Mercedes-Benz GLC is assembled by four different companies: Daimler AG itself, HICOM, TAAP, and Valmet Automotive. Just like they don't own companies that assemble iPhones, they don't need to own car assembly. They can dictate and control the quality without owning factories. Most parts are outsourced anyway.
I'm surprised so many people here on HN are not up to speed with Tesla enough to know that Apple could never compete with them if they don't do their own manufacturing. Tesla is the most vertically integrated car manufacturer right now, and that's a huge competitive advantage. They plan to manufacturer their batteries directly into the vehicle frames. This saves a ton of weight and would be nearly impossible for a co…
Rest of the car, assembly and painting is easily outsourced.
Tesla is below average car outside the skateboard. The quality of workmanship is not good. They would have already made millions of cars without Elons robot factory dream that failed.

> Apple is fundamentally now a company that can move immense amounts of capital into new industries with the underlying ethos of user experience. Also: insane supply-chain management chops, a skill that is more and more transferable - especially for electric cars.
I'm not sure I see that. Clearly they are good at making computer like things, but it's not like they're God's gift to supply chain management. There's been quite a few mistakes over the years. Hard to see them doing better than car companies that have been building cars for decades. I'm also not sure what Apple's edge here is. At this point all I really want out of an entertainment center is a screen for my phone to…
I'm sure Nokia had the same confidence in 2005.

My boss 10 years ago had a Ford Fusion with a Microsoft dashboard. Sometimes it would just go blank and he had to power cycle the car.
How was he as a boss?
I don’t understand this question. It reads like my comment could be interpreted in some other way than I intended but I can’t figure out what that would be.
