Maybe we should stop naming things after a man who was not only a nazi, but a uniform-wearing member of the SS? A future-looking project should leave such things in the past.

Completely tasteless, I really don't get why you would put any effort into this project and name it after a Nazi (unless, and I'm being extra cynical here, that's the way they lean??)

I think this is a pretty good overview, an interview with the author of a recent biography. I am partial to your view. I don't have a problem recognizing his achievements and celebrating his abilities, but using his name to honor him is going further than that. There are probably still people alive today that had a parent that died in slave labor at Mittelwerk building his rockets. I can't imagine how awful this woul…

My grandfather, who is still alive, was a slave laborer there before he was liberated by the American army. His descriptions of the place are pretty horrific.

Man. Von Braun? That’s not someone to name anything after. Please read Operation Paperclip by Annie Jacobsen. What Von Braun did was beyond horrible so much so to make the death camps look less bad in comparison, which is really saying something. They plowed through people making them death march then dig huge underground missile factories with their bare hands, then had them make missiles to kill their families and…

That books is really powerful. Something about it hit me more than other things on the topic

I didn't realize that concentration camp victims were building rockets?

Wow lots of downvotes for asking a question.

This video by Columbia based researchers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3D7QlMVa5s says that Coriolis acceleration induced canal sickness could be a major issue, and we don't know exactly what humans can tolerate. In the worst case scenario such torus has to be about one kilometer in diameter, which is prohibitively expensive.

> one kilometer in diameter, which is prohibitively expensive

Yes, that's why Steve Jobs built his with a .5km diameter. ;-)

I prefer people who don't employ genocide victims as slaves for building weapons of mass destruction, but that's me.

If that's your actual beef, Forced Labor Camps/ Gulags were far more heavily used by the Soviet Union than by the Nazis. They were also used to produce weapons. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulag#Economic_role

According to Chertok, GULAG workforce wasn't used at least when Baykonur, a significant project, was being built. It was direct involvement of Army corps used there.

Imprisoned labor force was used in WWII time Soviet aviation and rocketry development (Tupolev, Glushko, Korolyov). Other large projects were possibly too technical, challenging to employ forced labor?..

It’s an interesting design for a Torus, seems technical and economically doable once SpaceX’s starship gets going and with some motivated billionaires/organizations pooling together money.

If it could even generate enough revenue to cover operating costs that would be a huge win and serve as great demonstrator for future endeavours. An ambitious timeline would be by 2040. Recovering the cost of capital may need a much more developed market. An ambitious timeline here may be by 2070, a full generation later.

Sometimes people interpret questions about the facts as subtle challenges to the narrative. Its an interesting bit of psychology.

Maybe people should stop living in the past, naming after nazi doesn't necessarily mean supporting nazi.
