I was going to add you cant do Android development on these, as you need Android Studio, but that seems to be on the way — Support for Apple Silicon is in progress

I assume they have the OpenJDK JVM ported at this point so all of JetBrains' products should be working or close to working.

You also have GraalVM (Oracle), OpenJ9 (IBM) and Corretto (Amazon).

So plenty of enterprise-class JVMs available.

They are not priced competitive. Cheapest macbook air starts from $999. Cheapest Dell Inspiron starts from $319.

That's true, for sure. But I was answering to "Why would anyone (who is not forced) buy an Intel PC laptop when these are available and priced as competitive as they are?". The answer is simple, everyone, who does not want to spend $999 will buy an Intel/AMD laptop. And $999 is quite a lot for someone who does not need a powerful workhorse. That Insiron is extremely underpowered, yet it'll launch web browser and office apps with some swapping here and there. Apple is not going to kill x86 laptop market with it, just like it won't kill smartphone market with their $400 SE phone when you can buy $100 android phone.

Another thing is that you can buy "gaming" laptop for $999. Something like i7-10750H with GTX 1650. And it's powerful enough to run almost any game on high to medium setting. Apple GPU is awesome compared to Intel GPU, but compared to dedicated Nvidia GPU - not so much. So if you need GPU for gaming, that's another area where Apple does not compete with their new laptops. At least for now.

Ultrabook with focus on portability and long battery life - Apple is awesome here.

It certainly does when the best one can hope to bring home as software engineer is around 1000 euros after taxes.

That's for each buyer to consider, based on their budget and prospects.

Isnt the chip the exact sane in these devices? The air scores are probably going to tank massively when thenal throttling kicks in. There should be a decent performance gap between these machines then

IIRC, Azul is a hardware vendor for the JVM ... can you please share a public source on this collaboration between Azul & Microsoft?

I am really looking forward to where this goes. That said, I am definitely waiting for at least one generation to pass before I jump on the train. I’ve been through this before. It will be great, but Apple is a master at smoke & mirrors. Things will not go as smoothly as the sizzle reels make it seem.

I think this will be their smoothest transition by far. Everything is compiled by the same tool chain with much higher level frameworks.

I think you’re probably right, but it’s still a massive change. Basically, repaving the highway, while there’s cars driving on it. Apple has done this a few times before (but we don’t talk about Copland in polite company), so I know it will end well.

I think their new architecture will be awesome. Personally, I look forward to being able to debug iOS Bluetooth apps in the simulator, and I think some of the new form factors will be pretty cool.

But I can’t help but notice the current dearth of AAA apps that are already universal.

A transition like this is a big deal; especially if you have an app with thousands of function points, as it requires a complete, top-to-bottom re-test of every one.

In the unlikely case that you won’t find issues, it will still take a long time. Also, most companies won’t bet the farm on prerelease hardware; instead, using it to solve issues. They will still need to test against the release hardware before signing off for general distribution.

Also, I have a couple of eGPUs that I use. I don’t think the new architecture plays well with them.

I’m hoping that the next gen will obviate the need for them. They are a pain.

I jumped ship back to Linux (still sucks). This is the first new computer I’ve bought in almost a decade.

I think many professionals who need new hardware will use this as the catalyst to make them move back to PC hardware. The M1 looks amazing, but I need more than just Apple software to do my work. It’ll be a while before all the things I use get migrated.

I don't think that scoring high in the single core area is Apple's primary goal.

Doing it while not burning lots of Watts and being energy efficient is what Apple aims for.

And I doubt that AMD and especially Intel will offer an alternative here soon. Desktop yes, but not on mobile.

The 16GB max ram still seems a head scratcher. Not what would suppose I want for video editing.

The question is which professional software for video editing is available for this new platform? Probably not much at the moment. So these machines will be perfect for those who do their work with browser, email and not much more.

I'm using Tableau Desktop in my daily work and until it is available on this new platform - these Macs are not an option for me even if they are 10x more performant. I guess there are a lot of professionals that are constrained in a similar manner. So we will see if M1 is adopted in such scenarios at all.

A Ryzen 4800u actually uses up to 25W TDP, depending upon implementation. And it’s 45% slower in single core. Most importantly, the M1 is estimated to cost Apple $65, the 4800u is a $300+ part.

Unlikely OEM's are paying 300+ for a 4800u. Certainly more than $65, though.

That makes sense, AMD is selling to OEMs for a profit (over cost) while Apple is its own OEM, if any charging is done it's purely internal and for accounting purposes.

This comparison looks at different segments of the fabmanufacturerOEM relationship. Add the user in there and you might say that you can buy an AMD CPU for $100 but an Apple CPU will cost you $1000. Not very meaningful as a comparison.
