The YouTube suggestion algorithm is the problem! Create a new account, watch any political video, and then click through the suggestions. Keep clicking through the suggestions and in hour you will be on some extremist nonsense. YouTube is the source of this problem, and their solution is censorship? It's ridiculous. Show people the videos they have subscribed or searched for, and that's it. The majority of people don…
You don't even have to watch a political video. I have crap popping up all the time, "Watch this professor get destroyed by !" I know youtube is a shithole and yet it still surprises me. My son's favorite kid's show is only on YouTube so I created a new account, subscribed just to their channel and still inappropriate content shows up. How hard is this? I also can't block it for my daughter because she has school ass…

But how do you take the power back? How do you yell shark and get people to listen when they've been desensitized by an ocean full of fake sharks?
Start with yourself. Prefer better alternatives whenever possible. If you have the means: Start hosting. Contribute (code, tutorials, docs). Spread the word. Contribute funds to projects. Answer support questions/GH issues/forum posts from people who are having issues. When it comes to people you know and interact with, start with the “low-hanging fruit” (individuals who have skills/interest in technology or are alre…
I used to be outwardly and loudly critical of the system and people supporting it, but that got me nowhere, just isolated. When I stopped all criticism and just started aligning my life how I would like others to live, I finally started to get somewhere.

The realities of censorship are and historically have been large net losses. That was one of the large premises of the founding of the United States, among many other ideals. So in the interest humanity and historical evidence, censorship is and will always be a bad idea. The best ideas will eventually win, as history has also shown us. I'm pretty sure current China would disagree with you given the amount of people they've raised from essentially peasantry to a modern middle class in the past generation.

That experiment is still ongoing and it's unclear what the ultimate result will be. They've very much not reached steady state yet.
I much prefer the western system, but really all our experiments are ongoing.

Let me preface this by saying I used to be a free speech absolutist, and maybe I will be again some day. I still don't think the government should be banning speech. But I think companies moderating their spaces is necessary. Good moderation is large part of why this forum is so good in the first place. The history of the internet has shown us that unmoderated spaces turn into dumpster fires. German history seems to…
Platform has a legal definition, which was litigated in the early 90s. The result was if you’re a platform you’re not legally liable for the content of your website. The legislation calls out that’s speech must be user generated and flow of ideas cannot be restricted unless they are already illegal (eg. how to make a bomb).
Publisher also has a legal definition, which social media companies certainly don’t want because then they’re liable for all content and can be regulated further. Actually these companies don’t want any regulation The business models will eventually come under attack due to overreaching privacy policies and general CEO autonomy.
I’d also like to point out there’s some incestuous situations going on between the staff of Facebook, Twitter and Democratic campaigns including Biden’s. If we’re honest with ourselves we know it’s highly likely collusion and back channels exist between the two. I can provide more information if you’d like.

Generally speaking by attempting to publish the result in a journal or conference proceedings. There’s a process in place where your unreleased manuscript is sent to other researchers in your field for review. After making corrections based on their feedback, you can be approved for publication, at which point the general public gets a chance to evaluate it. Having done it, I don’t necessarily love the process and wo…
That's kind of irrelevant to people posting videos on YouTube though.

> Actually, if we could snap our fingers and wish social media out of existence tomorrow nothing really bad would happen, besides some influencers becoming poorer. I disagree. I would lose the ability to contact many good friends.
Why are you dependent on Facebook for these things? If you suddenly lost your account, you would lose those friends or would you find another way to communicate?
a surprising number of people don't realize that a) carriers are obligated to port their number and b) it is possible to transfer contacts when they buy a new phone. instead of fixing the original problem, they post "hey new number (xxx)-xxx-xxxx, add me!" or "new phone, send your numbers!" to facebook or instagram. I can't explain how this is supposed to work to every single person I want to stay in contact with, and I don't check social media much so I tend to miss these posts.
if I lost my facebook account, it wouldn't be a huge issue. I'd be able to track everyone down on other platforms. if all social media were shut down, there are at least a couple people I'd never be able to contact again.

The topic was masks. So following that advice caused many lives lost. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/04/why-world... UN specifically Israeli occupation (1948-Now) Kashmir dispute (1948-Now) Cambodia violence (1975-1979) Somali civil war (1991-Now) Rwandan civil war (1994) Srebrenica Massacre (1995) Darfur conflict in Sudan (2003-Now) Iraq invasion (2003-2011) Rohingya Crisis, Myanmar (2017-Now)
And all of that was caused directly by the UN? Or was more complicated than that, and the UN could do much as the veto powers blocked or delayed things? I'd say it is rather the latter. There were UN troops in Srebrenica, and their failure is a well covered topic. There are multiple resolutions against Israel, the first from the Suez crisis. Most just get ignored, not the least due to US vetos. The Iraq invasion was…
WHO has a global outlook and you have a person story. Those two conflict more often than not. Telling you masks don't work and then telling you they always worked and you must wear one is a big messaging error that has cost many lives. And the reasons behind are political. Trust with me has been broken.
If it's important I'll include a link with detailed context for each and throw in a few more examples for you.
