One of the reasons why OBS got so popular compared to Xsplit is that it is free.
I particularly enjoy that they added Mozilla's RNNoise library for AI noise suppression. It is not as good as Nvidia's RTX Voice but it does the job. This is very helpful to get some noisy microphones to behave nicely.
Or buy a $5 headset from your local gas station, so the microphone is close to the mouth and doesn't pick up the speaker...
The problem was not with picking up the speaker, it was with the noise of the microphone.
Love me some OBS, I use it for piano practice with my tutor. Simultaneous video feeds (face, hands) and window capture of VMPK mirroring the MIDI out of my digital piano piped into a virtual camera, then VBcable pipes the OBS monitor audio to an input source. Put those two together as the audio and recording devices in zoom and were off! If there is interest I’d love to write more about it and share, let me know!

It runs horribly on macOS. Like a night and day difference. If I understand correctly the difference is primarily regarding the encoder. I also switched my streaming machine over to windows recently. Using Boot Camp or a Hackintosh to be able to do that on the same computer? Might help to make the distinction between it overperforming via Boot Camp or underperforming on a Hackintosh.

Beside horrible, it's terrible, Just upgraded and can't even resize the panes. And the CPU usage is high even when not streaming or do any capture etc.

I think I hit the same point as you touch on, in that I identified voicemeeter as the likely solution but due to a rather intimidating number of options I couldn't quite summon the mental clarity to piece together the correct setup to achieve it. Like, I knew conceptually what I was trying to wire together but couldn't quite map it out. With breather's sibling comment, I suspect I'll be able to tease it out now.

This does not compete with OBS. It's useless for people doing remote well.
If you're doing remote teaching, learning, or work well, you have an appropriate camera and microphone setup.
Microphone should be close to the mouth (headset or similar), and because of power laws, at reasonable amplification, it will pick up almost no background noise. You should be using headphones/headset, and microphone won't pick up speaker noise, which is the other major source of audio issues. That can even be had with a $5 gas station headset. The audio noise / issue cleanup is for people who can't/won't/don't do this.
Automatic camera cropping is an anti-feature. You want to be able to show people things (whether kids holding up STEM projects, or business presentations showing tools and slides), and have cameras set up appropriately for that. Tools like Google Meet and Microsoft Teams become unusable for serious remote interactions precisely because of autocropping.
It's possible to buy hardware to do remote well for I suspect I got flagged since I criticized Google Meet for doing annoying things like autocropping. I apologize to all Googlers. I was wrong. You were right. When I present a document camera, with my face in the corner, my video conferencing tool SHOULD autocrop what I'm writing. If I'm presenting a PPT behind me, Google is smart to autocrop my presentation. Google is right. Google is always right. Since Google is always right, if I disagree with Google or criticize Google, Googlers are right to remove me from the Internet.

The framerate was terrible, the entire machine would lag, and the audio would constantly glitch out at best. Saved recordings were unwatchable.
I tried tweaking everything with the process priorities in OBS and the other apps, and could never get an acceptable result. AMD ThinkPad worked out of the box, did everything I described above, and CPU utilization stayed around 2-3%, and I couldn't even notice it was running while using other apps. All of this while I had it hooked up to extend the desktop onto 3 monitors. Streams and recordings are flawless.
