If you use Wayland (which... has its issues, but maybe they're better now?) on an XPS 13 Developer Edition... or even my junk Chromebook with MrChromebox's firmware installed so I can install Linux, you can get all sorts of gestures that are more than just "two gestures." Heck, even Windows supports gestures just fine. So...

I have yet to encounter any non-Mac trackpad gestures that don't feel cheap, laggy, and/or too unreliable to bother committing to muscle memory. Apple's trackpad haptics and OS-level gesture support are second to none.

You may be surprised how much equivalent laptops from other OEMs have caught up. The Dell XPS is very similar to the Macbook Pro, and Dell supports Ubuntu on it.

I got a MacBook-air sized xps, and the hardware is fantastic, better than any MacBook imo - the bezel alone makes it so.

But I have never had a laptop that gave me as much trouble with Linux. I bought two of them over the course of a couple of years, and both the one that shipped with Windows and the one that shipped with Ubuntu had CONSTANT hardware compat issues.

This was a while ago (after the reboot of the line), so the build quality and compatibility may each have gotten better/worse.

IIRC, the CAs Windows trusts charge absolutely ridiculous amounts of money, unless something has changed recently.

Which CAs are available for Windows, and how much do they cost, out of curiosity? Not a Windows developer.

One arguing that sn established0 pattern of behavior will continue into the future is not a slippery-slope fallacy. There is nothing fallacious about arguing that Apple will continue to make the OS more restrictive in the future, based on a profit motive.

There are plenty of comparisons online showing for the same price as a Mac you can get a PC that will edit your photos, compress your videos, render your 3D architecture 3x to 4x as fast as the fastest Mac you can buy. If you're a professional might be throwing money down the toilet waiting for your mac depending on your use case.

Note: I'm not a mac hater. I have 2, one I use every day and love it. I also have a PC I use every day. I still found the comparison videos enlightening.

I've been hearing that for the past decade. With the exception of some reasonably deprecated technologies (32-bit support, etc...), to this day I'm able to run essentially all of the software on my Mac that I did back in 2010.

If and when Apple does prohibit the running of third party apps, I'll switch to another platform. Until then, this is all just FUD.

Just thought I'd point out this is bad for Unity and Unreal. Tons of student devs making small games putting their apps on itch.io to share, no longer allowed unless they pony up $99 to Apple.

Well... there happens to be a way to disable that part of gatekeeper functionality if you want to. It’s just not a checkbox in settings, if I recall correctly it’s a terminal command that requires sudo. https://www.imore.com/how-open-apps-anywhere-macos-catalina-... But really, really only do this if you know what you’re doing. You can leave gatekeeper running but in a mode where it is much less restrictive. It may still prompt you if you just downloaded an app from Safari, that sort of thing.

I’m very curious to see whether this is still true once Apple starts shipping Pro machines with Apple Silicon processors. What if it’s not? How would that change the balance?

Have you really done that? REALLY? Because I work on Mac, Win10 and Linux every day. And Win10 doesn't even come close to the other two in terms of reliability, stability, and lack of unnecessary bullshit.

I just don't understand who can make this claim that Win is better than Macos with a straight face. Maybe for gaming. Maybe. The cost/fps is clearly better for Windows machines, but Apple puts so much more thought into their OS than windows. Hell, Windows still pops a Win95 dialog for drivers. Come on, man. Seriously? MacOs doesn't have built in ads on the home screen. MacOS has no REAL viruses, and clicking on malware is even harder now than Windows.

Downvote me all you want, but I think a lot of people on this thread have never even used a mac for more than five minutes, let alone developed on one. HN monoculture is real.
