I think that’s too pessimistic. If it weren’t for Twitter and Facebook then yes the environment for journalism would be challenging, but we wouldn’t be in the dire straits for debate that we’ve found ourselves at. Notable that this crisis did not happen pre-Facebook.

"Pre-Facebook" was also notably a time when internet penetration in the US was only 63% (15% globally) and smartphones were practically non existent.

I'm guessing this is referring to https://twitter.com/bariweiss/status/1268628680797978625 : The New Guard has a different worldview, one articulated best by @JonHaidt and @glukianoff. They call it "safetyism," in which the right of people to feel emotionally and psychologically safe trumps what were previously considered core liberal values, like free speech.

She tweeted this during an all hands meeting. It’s incredibly inappropriate and has nothing to do with free speech.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: Stop trusting outlets. Find journalists with integrity and follow everything they do, no matter the outlet.

I've been saying somewhat similar things lately. Although, I do believe some worthwhile outlets exist. But, do you believe this is a new problem? Was it always bad to trust outlets?

It has gotten worse, but increasingly the more I dig into old media the more I understand it's been around for a long time. That said, the explosion of the internet as a new branch of old media in particular has gotten worse as the oligarchs catch up.
