This has nothing to do with so-called SJWs. Please think twice before using politically toxic language in a thread that isn't even about politics. I guess it pleases you to tell a story about how this trivial UI design decision is actually the result of the machinations of your political enemies. But there is absolutely zero evidence for that. Do you really find it so hard to imagine that the decision was made with g…

#312I disagree with the decision strongly, but I'm a developer and probably a "power user". A casual user might not even know what a URL is. Do you know there's a staggering amount of users who type "google.com" into Google?
Are we promoting idiocracy now? If someone doesn't know what it is he/she should find out, or live with not knowing.

> "SJW" is a pejorative at this point because the key part isn't about the ideas being expressed but the motivations behind advocating those views. Is SJW really seen as pejorative? In my mind it's a term used only by the alt-right, and usually if alt-right is trying to smear someone it's a good indicator the target is advocating a good cause. So I usually take SJW as a positive description.

Insightful, but I am confused by the final paragraph: > I'm tired of this anti-Web and anti-accessibility SJW nonsense “SJW” must have a meaning I’m not familiar with, because Social Justice Warriors would be pro-accessibility, not anti.
> “SJW” must have a meaning I’m not familiar with, because Social Justice Warriors would be pro-accessibility, not anti. They would be, except blind, simple-minded activism tends to have unintended consequences that make it a net negative for the cause.
What on Earth.

"SJW" is a pejorative at this point because the key part isn't about the ideas being expressed but the motivations behind advocating those views. It implies that despite outward appearances it's all rather self-serving, a form of getting validation and superficial virtue signaling. So when you see major rewrites, major redesigns and controversial changes in popular products you'll often find an agenda behind it. Some…
The use of the word "SJW" is the same kind of social singalling that you attempted to criticize. It's a cheap insult, counter-productive to the discussion, and trivializes the real work on social justice that is necessary for humanity to grow up and become a mature civilization.
I actually agree with the main point you're making, that there are people who superficially attach themselves to social causes for selfish reasons. I am also skeptical when I hear about "serving the public", it's become a meaningless catch phrase by for those who seek to gain a leadership position in society.
And it may be tangentially relevant, that Google hiding the full URL in their brower was done in the name of "improving user experiece", when in fact it's more likely for a self-serving purpose. But that's not "SJW", it's a dark pattern used by corporations and political groups, on whichever side of the artificial divide.
So, I just want to point out that the word has been defined by the media you consume, that there are strings being pulled by the "anti-SJW" side also. It's best to not use that word, otherwise you risk discrediting any valid points you're making.

I'm not sure how I feel about the proposed (anti-?)feature, but in what way is this "SJW nonsense"?
I doubt that any sane technician would opt for showing the user less information. So the decision must be from someone else, someone who has no clue about how a URL works. So because that person doesn't know about URLs, nobody should know about ULRs.

#319A few years later, instead of type news.ycombinator.com, you would need to search for "hacker news", scroll through the ads and then click on the link.
So it could be a slow transition to inserting a sort of interstitial ads inter your browsing.

Urban dictionary can be useful for looking up pop culture terms, but it's not the place to go for canonical definitions ....
There is no canonical source for living languages.
Dictionaries can only be historical references.
