Yes, it is kind of weird to like a browser where the company behind it are actively working against the web when there are decent alternatives (arguably better alternatives) that does not contribute to a monopoly that we can not break.

Do you think IE6 was bad? Remember how long it took to get rid of it? Imagine a world where the monopoly leader doesn't just walk away from the browser (which is what MS did with IE6) but actively abuses the situation. It will be orders of magnitude worse. Say hi to amp. Say hi to chrome. Say hi to google. Say goodbye to the web.

I never switched away from Firefox. I am old enough to know that nothing comes free, especially from a Big Corporation. As customers, all we can do is to always keep a good alternative alive, no matter what.

If their goal is really to help detect fraudulent sites (the sorts of google.com.notahacker.tk), they can just show the domain in a more prominent way -- they're already deemphasizing the part of the URL after the domain name anyway.

This is clearly not their motive.

What Google is trying to do here is to drift the web from its most iconic components: the URL. This is the biggest threat to the web that we loved for so many years.

Safari has an option to include the full URL. As a developer, I need the full URL so I turn on the option. If Chrome by some miracle actually goes through with this, I'll try to see if I can get around it (because at the end of the day, everyone uses chrome and chrome dev tools are by far the best).

Pretty ironic for a company that wouldn't exist except for the ability to crawl and index URLs. So now only the domain and TLDs are to be shown. I presume that a "full" URL can be typed once the URL bar is clicked though? But any guesses how long until they remove the ability to enter URLs?
