> I can understand why the public is skeptical You can understand the skepticism and yet equate the skeptical people to "anti-vax" movement? That's very sneaky of you.

Both movements disregard evidence and reality to fit their feelings.

Please show the scientific consensus that corporations are good, have almost no side effects and we should trust them.

Let's not compare apple to a public institution. What apple does is in the interest of the shareholders and nothing else.

Perhaps the institutional shareholders have Apple holdings precisely because their privacy-centric practices increase their stability, independence, and profit—without having to sell out their customers.

No, they hold it just to get a return on their investment.

Companies shouldn't be allow to become as rich and powerful as Apple. We're supposed to live in a democratic system. Corporate power on the scale of FAANG is the antithesis of democracy.

Thought experiment: People willingly giving this power over to an alternative group of people (a company in this case) could be considered a democratic vote from a populace? Providing power is willingly given to them by the actions of the group.

At best people are voting for who has the best product or service to solve their immediate needs. I don't buy Apple products (and I'm fully in the Apple ecosystem) because of Apple's great vision for how society should develop. Democracy operates on a different plane.

> That may not happen immediately on release because the fabulous NHSX development team are all working hard on getting the product ready. But it will happen. That's just annoying nonsense though isn't it? There are reasonable (well 'ok they happen, whatever') causes for delay in open-sourcing something that didn't start out that way, but... Do any of them take more than seconds of developer time? They mean it 'may n…

The UK has passed the point of parody. If you want to justify any action, just say something about how great the NHS is before you do it.

It's the equivelent of saying "9/11" in the US.

Install it on a secondary phone? Of course it all depends on how serious the government is and how hard you are willing to work to circumvent controls.

Just a minor annoyance except of course for those not rich enough to own two phones, but I suppose if you didn't want to be oppressed you should have thought of that before you decided to be born poor, right?

You can get a cheap android phone and a faraday cage bag for the cost of a night out at the pub

I have to say, working at Apple and knowing all the hard work that goes into this and making sure your data stays private while also being able to combat this disease, it's very frustrating to read a lot of the comments here. I can understand why the public is skeptical, but I feel like as a society we've swung so far away from institutional trust that now nothing good can actually emerge. The anti-vax movement is a…

So a democratic system that ignores property rights when it suits the mob that is not actually Democratic.

Can someone please explain to me how a “libertarian” like Peter Thiel could start and run one of the most anti libertarian companies? What are his beliefs, exactly? I mean besides “zero to one” and “competition is for losers, build a monopoly”? I wonder how much effect he had on Zuck early on. He was the first big check in. Seems it was a great match there.

>Can someone please explain to me how a “libertarian” like Peter Thiel could start and run one of the most anti libertarian companies? What are his beliefs, exactly?

None. He is a slimy character with no principles or morals besides his own selfish drive. He wants to make money, period. Other considerations don't factor into it. Make no mistake, he (and people like him, the capitalist sociopaths that hold power in our society) would kill your entire family for a handful of pennies if they would get away with it.

If there were any justice in the world these kinds of people would be shunned and censored by society. Yet it's precisely the opposite. These are the behaviours which are encouraged and rewarded.

As a person reading comments it's frustrating that an Apple employee thinks their company is special and should be trusted. It doesn't matter what you say, at the end of the day your goal is the same as any other company: profit. There's a zero percent chance I will install any of your garbage on my phone on purpose.

As a lifelong public servant, welcome to the ungrateful side of life. If you're providing a service to the public with the hopes of their gratitude, you will be sad. Do it for the same reason you change your baby's diaper: you love them and it needs doing. They might take pleasure in pissing on you while you're doing it, but this thing you love will be better off afterward.

Haha. Are you serious? Equating Apple with "public servants"? Probably the most naive thing I've ever seen.
