There may well be flights. Crew are exempt, so at least for slot-controlled airports it's probably worth flying anyway to keep the slot; you'll have some US citizens / permanent residents and their families, and you can fill the belly with cargo since you have spare weight. Might be worth it even for airports that aren't slot-controlled.

Various aviation authorities in Europe are relaxing the requirements that is driving the slot controls & ghost flights. Don't have the link now but read it earlier.

Banning travel isn't a magic cure-all that guarantees zero cases, it just lowers the initial caseload. That's extremely important because exponential growth is extremely slow in the beginning -- it takes as long to go from 1 to 100 as 100 to 10,000. If banning travel reduces 100 starter cases to 1, you double the time you have.

Some commenters on this post are having a hard time acknowledging this aspect. I think every little bit helps, this included

It won't. Screening all arrivals is helpful, but just shutting down travel is going to end up creating a whole new class of problems.

Nah, all planes are just going to be routed through a non-European destination en route back. The Azores are about to be very popular.

It's about whether you've been to Europe at all in the 14 days preceding, not about whether your immediate origin was European.

And for Schengen, you'll have a stamp in and out (assuming 1 passport).

Not to mention probably there's only a small use case of going to Europe without needing to return.

US citizens can always return though. It's kind of unconstitutional to stop them from returning.

> It's kind of unconstitutional to stop them from returning.

Sort of. The trick is to get the airline overseas to refuse boarding. (Probably) not unconstitutional because it's not US soil.

Just like how the US directs airlines overseas to refuse boarding if you show a US birth certificate and photo ID instead of a US passport.

The UK is an Island nation with entry controls - passports are required even from the EU and there is at least token screening at the airports and docks of people with fever or other virus symptoms. Not that it’s the same thing, but being an island (so no walking traffic) and having some screening in place means that the UK simply doesn’t have certain diseases (like rabies) that are at least somewhat common in Europe…

The UK is about a week behind Europe in terms of covid 19

Is that more or less than the US itself?

In some places this is relevant, in other places such as Scandinavia and Germany, other than public transportation it is not.

Are you saying people have big backyards, eat loads of tskeour and order stuff online, in Scandinavia? Have you ever lived in Scandinavia?

Not sure how the backyard argument is relevant anyway. It's not like that makes not spreading the disease that much easier. Public transport is certainly a risk. But I'm not even sure if e-commerce helps. Going to Walmart at 1am and using self checkout is probably much safer than receiving your delivery from someone who might be infected and visits several hundred homes a day.

You’re describing the opposite of flattening the curve. Closing the gates now does nothing. I do not mean to be patronizing, but this is literally life or death and the math is very simple. Today there are k infected people. Tomorrow there will be kn people. If n is unsustainable, any positive value for k is equivalent. Arbitrarily large changes to k today make an arbitrarily small contribution to the final doubling.…

What do you propose be done instead of a travel ban?

1. Restrictions on internal travel

2. Isolation for those exposed or showing symptoms

3. Paid time off work for people who can't do their jobs in isolation, to make sure people report exposure and symptoms

4. Suspension of public gatherings

Some of these are being done voluntarily and/or by local governments, but that's very patchy.

Other than the citation I gave? > The World Bank. Here's some direct links though: - https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SP.URB.TOTL.IN.ZS?locat... - https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SP.URB.TOTL.IN.ZS?locat...

Urban population includes suburbs. That 82% breaks down into 53% suburban (175M, per other poster) and 29% urban (98M).

Urban population in Europe also includes suburbs. Yes, there's less sprawl but enough people in Europe living in urban settings have backyards and reasonably large houses.

An executive order is not in effect until published in the federal register. Whatever is published there is what actually matters. As of now this executive order has not been published. You can check here: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/search?conditions%...

Underrated comment ^^

I see in some places it says this includes cargo / shipping. Is that true?

Trump said "these restrictions will not only apply to the tremendous amounts of cargo..." but DHS is now clarifying that it doesn't apply to cargo, and the order itself doesn't mention cargo[1]. So who knows? [1] https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/proclamation...

It's pretty clear that Trump misread his statement. In more ways than just that one.
